If I uninstall PMS and reinstall it what all would I lose? My first priority is to get it back running correctly but any other items I can save such as settings/and user logs so that it will remember what was watched or not. I’m not giving up, I just wanted to know what all I’d lose if I had to go the nuclear option.. thank you again for all your help so far, I’d be totally lost.
IP Addresses
Are you using an ISP provided router?
If so, talk with them and verify it is setup correctly.
Your Plex Media Serer has an address of 72.241.x.y. Your devices, such as your iPhone, have 72.241.w.y addresses (a different subnet). These are public IP addresses. Given the dearth of public IPv4 addresses, it is very uncommon for them to be used on a home network.
Most home networks have private IP addresses. Usually a 192.168.x.y address (could also be 10.x.y.z or 172.16.x.y to 172.31.x.y).
It would be good to verify that the IP addresses on your home network are correct. If they are not, it can cause Plex to behave improperly.
VPN
If possible, leave it turned off while troubleshooting. One less variable to consider.
Uninstall/re-install
There is no indication that an uninstall/re-install will help.
PMS Unresponsive
Looking at the logs again. After you ran the DBRepair utility, you streamed Batman & Robin to your iPad for about an hour and 40 minutes, then stopped.
Did you stop the stream or did it fail?
Could you access the server directly, using a web browser pointed at its IP address?
I can see the streaming, and also it stop.
I just don’t see why it stopped.
That’s the confusing part.
For the internet I’ll look at that tonight when I’m back home to see what I can do about the public address.
For Plex media server: the iPad had a pop up in Plex saying that it could not find the server and then terminated the stream. I went to my computer and the Plex desktop app had lost connection to the server as well. I opened the carrot at the bottom right of the screen and right clicked on PMS and selected open. It launched an edge explorer webpage targeting my server, it did not load and displayed on screen 503 unavailable..
Through my restarts over the last few days I normally get the 503 unavailable or just nothing loads, on
MOD EDIT: Removed screenshots. Do not post X-Plex-Token (displayed in URL).
3 occasions I have gotten the picture attached for maintenance. I am attaching a picture as well of what normally happens which is the web page just doesn’t load anything.
Also I forgot to add, I have an ISP supplied modem but my wifi is the Google wifi 6e mesh system with two mesh points.
Thanks for the info.
I removed the screenshots. They displayed the server x-plex-token, which is a security risk.
Seeing the 503 message for a minute or two after a restart is not a problem. It should not last longer unless loading a PMS update with a lot of database changes.
Check the setup of the Google Wi-Fi. The ISP modem should provide one public IP address to the Google device. The mesh should then provide private IP addresses to everything on your network.
Sorry about that, I wasn’t aware it had any private information in it.
I’m not sure if it’s important or just the final straw that broke the camels back but all these issues started from when I moved to the latest server update. Like a day or two after, and I have not added any content since the 28th of last month so I don’t think it’s content related.
I had tried moving it back to the older versions but the problems still were there..
I will try and check the Google app and find the address, do you need any of the information?
I think I know what the issue with the IP is, I have the Ethernet from my modem go to a splitter.. from the splitter one goes to my wifi and then the other line goes to my server. To make it more secure I believe I need to have the modem go right to my wifi and then connect my splitter to the back of the wifi puck for my other hard lined devices?
Checking my wifi pucks the WAN has that 72. Number and the lan port has a 192. Number…
I changed up the Ethernet and it said it was a new connection. Plex worked again for an hour before going off line again..
That’s better.
Check Windows Settings → Network & Internet. Make sure it is a private network.
Windows may have changed it when you moved the Ethernet cable.
Check the Windows power settings on the Plex server. Make sure nothing is causing Windows to slow down, sleep, shutdown the Ethernet port, etc.
I’ve Windows 10 Pro. Not sure if Windows 10 Home looks the same (in case you have Home version).
Windows Settings → System → Power & Sleep. Turning off screen won’t matter. Set Sleep to Never.
Below Sleep is “Additional power settings.” If you see that, click on it. It should open the Power Options Control Panel.
Select the High Performance plan.
See if that helps.
So I believe that I have fixed it (by cheating). I have had it running for 10 hours so far without having to restart it. It’s too soon to say for sure that it’s fixed but this is the longest it’s been running all week.
I remembered that previously I had set up windows to create restore points every few days. I went back in my restore logs and selected the most current one that was before the update. After restoring the backup Plex fired up correctly and has been running as it should.
I call it cheating because it doesn’t tell us why it stopped running.. the latest server update has not been installed still and I am afraid to do it again.
My hope is to wait for the next update to come out and then run that one. But my plan going forward with server updates will be to create a restore point before in case something happens.
Plex still remembers all my watched shows that I had started after having the issues which leads me to believe that the restore didn’t affect the Plex data logs. If there is any information you want me to pull so you can cross examine it for others please let me know.
As of now I will conclude that it was one of the three issues. A corrupt PMS update (or it didn’t install properly), a windows background update that affected PMS or Something ISP related due to it being on a public IP.
Thank you for your help and I will report back in a few days or if it goes down again..
9 days so far and it’s still working fine, just wanted to update the thread. Thank you again for your help!
