Plex not seeing my usb drive on synology 916+

First hello everyone !
Second I am really sorry I am very much a noob in this and I am suffering from a migraine, meaning I am going to be a idiot on two fronts.
I am using the synology 916+ as a storage device for my shield pro tv which is the server for plex which has been working fine however I have been running out of space, so I added a usb drive to my 916 and my 916 sees it fine as does my windows pc but I cannot for the life of my get plex to see it. I have as far as I am aware set the permissions correctly for the drive for both my plex user account and my main 916 user account for the usb drive but when I go to add the drive as a library in the web interface as I would normally do in plex it just shows the standard internal mounted hard drives.

My dsm should be the latest which is DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 5

still sounds like a permission issue.
does the Plex user have full access (read/write)?

The USB drive will show up as a shared folder in Control Panel - Shared Folders. Don’t forget to look for it there and add user plex to the Permissions tab.

Let me know if you’ve already done this.

Read/write is enabled for the usb drive and all the other drives for the plex account.

I can take a screenshot and upload it to my google drive if that would be helpful ?

Is it ok for me to link to my google drive with the two screenshots just incase I am missing something ?

It looks to me if everything is all correct and in order, again I am in migrain (idiot) mode so I could be missing something very obvious.

Instead of involving Google, you can attach screenshots here by attaching or drag & drop (it will show a link when upload it complete)

I would like to see if anything shows in your logs. Setting - server - help - download logs . this will give you a ZIP file you can either attach or drag/drop.

tv drive is the drive in question. I will go do the server logs now, give me two minutes. Thanks for the help.

Here you go, hope I have done everything ok.

I see part of the problem. The database is extremely fragmented. This will cause all kinds of stuff to fail because the parts can’t talk to each other fast enough and time-out.

Jan 04, 2018 22:28:16.804 [10709] WARN - SLOW QUERY: It took 290.000000 ms to retrieve 75 items.

After you correct this ( Hover over Libraries - click the ellipsis - Optimize Database ), Restart PMS

I am concerned about these errors but they may false errors.

Ok did the optimize database and restarted the PMS and still no luck.

My DS1815+ shows disks as /volumeXXXXX in PMS. e.g. /volume1 and /volumeUSB1. I do not understand why you’re seeing them with the names you do.

Here is how PMS sees my storage. Can you find this anywhere on your system?

I have all of my main drives in the 916 raided as one drive in the configuration where you lose one of the drives capacity but a drive dies you can just pop another in and not lose any data.

Then the usb I formatted using the tool inside the 916.

@Stanl3h

Did you mount the network share on your Shield before you added the USB drive on your NAS? If so, you need to unmount the network share on the Shield and remount it. The SMB implementation on the Shield could be better.

What formatting did you use? BTRFS or EXT4 ?

Storage Manager will show you this? Can you get a screenshot?

That is all I have
The PMS is on the shield itself as a friend told me it would do a better job than the 916

I have loaded up my shield and checked its settings under mounted network drives and it shows every drive on their other than the usb one on the 916.

I clearly have it shared because I can access it on my windows computer I am on right now.

Ok it doesnt show up under storage manager but under external device as you can see. Have I done something incredibly stupid ?

I’d like to understand your configuration better.

Am I correct understanding?:

  1. PMS runs on the Shield
  2. You use the DS916 as the storage
  3. The problem you’re seeing is that the Shield can only see the main storage of the DS916 and not the external drive?

You understand perfectly
The external drive is connected through a powered anker usb 3 hub connected to the 916 if that makes any difference.

I just realised the external drive is in ext4 not btrfs if that could be the problem, I hope not it took forever to copy across that 5tb of data lol

Thank you. You just supplied the missing piece.

DSM does not support connecting drives through a USB hub.

Plug drive into the port directly. It will start working correctly. You’ll be able to properly share it.

I had the same problem with Synology when I first started using it.
