Plex not transcoding TrueHD 7.1

Server Version#: 1.32.4.7164
Player Version#: 9.24.0.2105 (8c34791) - Shield

Hello - I’m having an issue that I can’t seem to track down. The short of it:

  • I can play a 1080p movie with a TrueHD 5.1 audio stream that gets transcoded to OPUS (correctly).

  • I can play a 4K video with DTS-X 7.1 that gets direct played

  • I can play a 4K video where I’ve selected the AC3 5.1 audio stream

  • I cannot play the same 4K video if I select the TrueHD 7.1 audio stream.

Plex won’t seem to transcode the audio on the 7.1 stream, all I get is the spinning circle non-stop. Stream doesn’t error, or kick me back to the menu. I’ve tested the same 4k files with Jellyfin and with my Vizio SmartTV app (same plex server) and in both those cases, the video file plays fine (Plex Server transcoding audio).

My setup is NVIDIA Shield into a Yamaha YAS soundbar into a Vizio P55-F1 TV (all via HDMI ARC).

I’ve tried multiple Plex containers, including the official one.
I’ve tried setting the transcode directory to /tmp/transcode and to a directory on my NVME cache drive.
I’ve played with all the Plex/Shield/TV settings I can find related to audio - nothing seems to work.
I’ve looked in the debug logs and haven’t seen any issues - they can be found here Untitled - Pastebin.com.

I’m lost at this point.

Hello,
my server is running Debian (Linux) in a VM and the player is also an Android TV system.

I could create the problems with a NVIDIA Shield TV and a Sony TV, also Android TV.

Also, the problems change with the setting pass-through.

  • If the passthrough is set to HDMI there are no problems. All movies are played with all audio tracks without problems.
  • If the pass-through is set to Optical, only movies with selected AC3 audio track are played. EAC3 and TrueHD create a never ending loading circle.
  • If pass-through is turned off, movies with AC3 and EAC3 will play, but TrueHD will still create a never-ending loading cycle.

It makes no difference if the access is local or remote.

DTS audio tracks I have not yet tested.

This is what I was able to find out.
