Plex Now Transcoding x264 to Devices that previously Direct Streamed/Played

The new Plex Experience continues to be a complete ■■■■-show no one asked for. Now, I’m noticing that x264 files are being transcoded when played on Google devices and it’s causing them to skip. WTF? They can already direct play/stream. Why is the new app forcing a transcode?

Already a known issue (several codecs actually).

I have the test files and will be compiling a complete list for Engineering tomorrow.

I will be testing against build 2025.16.0 (build 1060)

@ChuckPA I’m honestly at a loss as to how the new Plex Experience could be released with this many bugs. Was there simply no testing done? I work with software/site devs all day and if we ever released something this buggy, we’d all be fired.

Casting, basic functionality, even the UI feels unintuitive and a lot of familiar things that users depend on are no longer easily as accessible. Is Plex looking for a creative/full service agency to handle these things? I can make some recommendations.

Even creating bug reports seems to be something that gets ignored. You’re the only one on here who responds to anyone for the most part (IMO).

It’s hard to justify staying with Plex when there’s a blatant disregard for its users and their preferences.

I really hope progress is being made. I can’t play ANYTHING on devices I cast to. It just sits buffering a codec it should be direct streaming. I’d love to be able to lower the resolution to see if that works, BUT PLAYBACK SETTINGS ISN’T AVAILABLE ANYMORE ON THE STUPID NEW EXPERIENCE WHILE CASTING, FOR SOME DUMB REASON.

What are you trying to play HEVC HDR ?
Is there a capable GPU ?

I’m trying to play x264 mp4/mkvs on a Chromecast from a phone/tablet. It just sits. x264 should be a direct stream/direct play codec for nearly ANY device in the last 10 years. Those same files work just fine on SmartTV apps and PCs, as well as playing locally on a phone itself.

There were previously reported issues with ChromeCast.

I have one, somewhere.

Same problem, but no way to get it to work. I have a Chromecast Ultra. If I play it directly on my Android, Direct Play/Stream works fine, but if I put the Chromecast on, any video in x264 or x265 is automatically transcoded as h264 and the subtitles are set to WEBVTT… there’s no way to get it to work. I had to install the previous version to get it working again… I won’t be updating it again for a while.

Hello! I am experiencing the same situation. Before the update, I could direct stream x264 videos on Chromecast. Now I can do it just from the Chrome browser; when I start casting from the Android app, the Plex server transcodes the content. I hope this issue can be fixed soon!

Same situation. Suddenly a lot of movies that have to be transcoded over and over again. Otherwise, just skip! I’m waiting for the fix…

Nearly 3 weeks and no fix. @ChuckPa any progress? I’m sick of having my server transcode x264 to Google devices. This is ridiculous.

This sounds like what I’m still experiencing, unable to use Plex for well over a month at this point.
Android app version 2025.17.0
Samsung Galaxy s24 ultra one UI 7.0

It can see both Chromecast devices.
I can select them.
App screen just sits and spins.
Chromecast screen is black showing the loading spin as well
Then it just stops even trying on the app and the “pop up” where it was attempting to attach to the Chromecast and the Chromecast screen reverts back to the screen when not being utilized.

Plex suddenly wants to transcode every movie. That was never the case before ‘The New Experience’. Everything streamed directly (Chromecast). This way, Plex is no longer usable

They need to just fix it.

@elan @ChuckPa can we get any info on this? Is this just another thing you’re no longer supporting? Or are you blaming Google on this one despite it still working with older versions of the app?

Only took a month. Let’s see how long it takes to get shuffling and casting back
