This upgrade has rendered the Plex app on my new 24” Insignia Fire TV useless. You can’t even find the app in the App Store anymore. What’s happening guys ?
Same issue. Older FireTv Pendant and 2 new Fire Stick 4K. Cleared Cache and data and uninstall re-install. It worked for about an hour and then went back to crashing.
It should be at the bottom right of the settings screen when it is enabled.
since the uno update I can’t play x265 content fluently
before I had this problem only on the old fire tv stick, after using the 4k fire tv stick it played even 4k content like a charm.
now with this new crippled UI it’s again a problem to hardware decode the stream. the server tries to encode and is not powerful enough
thats ridiculous guys
Thank you. I have the first set of logs. I pasted them into a text file and uploaded.plex-log.txt (1.1 MB)
The other thing that is very annoying is the sort settings. In the past, I would select how I want the videos sorted and it would remember. Now, every time I successfully get to my content (which is a challenge), the sort option default to their original settings. I can resort the way I want, but why did that change for us as well? I want Plex to remember the settings I choose.
Thank you for the logs.
In settings Experience row at the end, enable Remember selected tab it will remain in whatever tab (recommended, library, or collections) you were at last when in that library, and if it was “Library” then it will also remember whatever filters and sorts you had selected.
Here is another log upload.PlexLog.txt (55.8 KB)
I’m having the exact same problems as everyone else here, SEVEN FireTV devices which are a mix of Fire Sticks, Toshiba TV’s with Fire Built in and Fire TV boxes. All of them are a mix of 1st Gen through to the latest 4k which I only bought a few weeks ago, all have the exact same problem.
Some are on Wifi, Some hard wired, I have cleared the cache, cleared data, re-installed the app all to no avail. I have one fire stick which I was able to launch without updating and it is still working perfectly, but the devices which updated to the new UI are unusable and keep crashing.
At startup, I just get a yellow home button on the left and spinning circle on the right. If I touch any button on the remote it crashes instantly, if I leave it alone then it spins for 20 or 30 seconds then crashes and I’m back at the Amazon home screen.
Did anyone at plex actually test this update before pushing it out to the masses?
We have been working on this issue, from what we can see it occurs with low powered devices that have a lot of libraries on a particular server.
If you are able to sideload on your device a build, please try installing this build and reporting back (these are the builds for Fire TV devices):
Armv7aAmazonFireExo: https://artifacts.plex.tv/android-experimental/7.19.2.11946-1f3e3af1/PlexForAndroid-7.19.2.11946-1f3e3af1-Armv7aAmazonFireExo.apk
Armv7aAmazonStdExo: https://artifacts.plex.tv/android-experimental/7.19.2.11946-1f3e3af1/PlexForAndroid-7.19.2.11946-1f3e3af1-Armv7aAmazonStdExo.apk
Thanks!
I downloaded the first build and installed it 2 different ways, abdlink and download.com. They both installed it without errors, but when I look for the app in “Your Apps and Channels”, it was not there. I was able to install it when using Download.com, but when I closed the app, it was nowhere to be found.
Interestingly enough, I went to install the app from Amazon, and it too won’t show up in the Apps menu. So now I have nothing.
Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
Thanks. I checked that setting and it was already set to on. So I turned it off and back on, went to the library, changed the filter from sort by title to sort by date added, closed and reopened Plex and it had reverted back to sort by title. So not sure.
Installed “PlexForAndroid-7.19.2.11946-1f3e3af1-Armv7aAmazonFireExo.apk” using ADBlink and it’s working like a charm. Did a lot of force stopping of the app, rebooting of the device, and such. It opens very fast and opens the libraries quickly.
The only thing that it isn’t doing, despite the setting “Remember Selected Tab” being set to On, is that it doesn’t remember the sort option I choose. I’m changing it from Sort by Title to Sort by Date Added (it’s for my DVR recordings so I want to see the latest recordings first). But other than that, an almost complete improvement in user experience.
The only other thing I did notice was that, in the “Manage Installed Applications” area of the FireTV device settings, when I view the Plex app, it has “Permissions” as the first choice. Going into there, it shows only “Storage” with Deny selected by default. So I thought maybe that’s why it’s not remembering the sort settings. But when I try to change it, it doesn’t give me access to change it.
Hope this helps. But I will be keeping this installed until you release the official 7.19.2.11946 version. Thanks for sharing this on the board.
Just for the heck of it, I went ahead and uninstalled FireExo and installed “PlexForAndroid-7.19.2.11946-1f3e3af1-Armv7aAmazonStdExo.apk” just to compare if there was a difference in the “remember selected tabs” setting issue.
So, ran it through the same gauntlet of reboots, force closes, etc. Both StdExo and FireExo are identical to me. Both load fast and run smoothly on my FireTV device. Neither remember the sort settings though.
Time to watch some DVR. Thanks again!
I just tried a hard reset on my Fire TV. Erased and reinstalled all my apps on a fresh install. All my sideloaded apps work fine, however, I still cannot get Plex to show up in the Apps and Channels page whether I sideload or install it from Amazon.
Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this???
wish there was just a rollback option. I have updates disabled for plex on my fire tv’s besides the new one I just bought (forgot to turn them off). It’s nearly unusable. This is why I have updates disabled. We cannot trust you guys to not make things literally unusable.
Please stop redesigning the user interface over and over. ALL YOU DO IS BREAK IT OVER AND OVER!!! Also, fire your testing employees. They let these broken pieces of software out way too much.
We are rolling out a fix to Amazon for the sluggish/crashy behaviour for servers with a lot of libraries. It will be available as soon as Amazon approves the build.
Until then, if you have success sideloading (sorry you are having trouble @tjbirish84_gmail_com, unfortunately I’m not sure how to sideload with development tools) the new build it available here: Release Announcements - Android TV beta
Thank you for your help and keeping us up-to-date with progress. Hoping this is fixed soon!
Thanks Sam. I think I’ve finally gotten things straightened out. I did install the new build. It runs and is stable, but it doesn’t contain my files, only web shows, news, TIDAL, and podcasts.
I look forward to the fix. Thanks.
I’m having the same issue on my FireStick 4K. Even with the “remember selected tab” on it will not remember the settings. It’s very frustrating. Is there a fix?
Also is there any way to get the old app back? My family really doesn’t like the new layout. The side menu is a pain and makes our TV look like a massive cell phone.
I am experiencing the same issue with 5 different types of firesticks. It’s very frustrating having to reset and relog into the app each time you want to use it. I have not found anyway to use an older version of the app. I’m just hoping that Plex comes out with an fix for this very quickly!!! Seeing that all of my devices I use to watch my Plex are my firesticks.
