Plex on Linux, Ubuntu Budgie/Chromium not using local media folders

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: N/A

Fresh install of Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 on a Dell Latitude E5420. Only other software is VPN Private Internet Access. Under default user folder structure, I created a Movies folder and put a few movie files in that folder. The full path to that folder is “/home/userID/Videos/Movies” (character case is accurate). Using default Chromium browser, no add-ins or extensions, I installed Plex Media Server 1.18.4.2171. I do not pay for Plex services. I added a Movies library and pointed it to the folder above and the interface shows the movie files in the folder. I add the library. When I complete the configuration process, Plex displays “There was an unexpected error loading this library”. When I click on the “+” next to my my media server name the Add Library window opens, I click on “Movies” and “next” and no library is there. I create a new Movie library (duplicating the process I did above) and the same thing happens.

What am I doing wrong?

Please make a tar.gz of the “Logs” directory and attach it.
We’ll take a look at it.

Do you mean the entire /var/log folder?

No.

/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs

directory please

Here it is.mkLogs.tar.gz (161.7 KB)

Apologies for the extra .gz files. I’m not a nix guru…

No problem.

What it’s seeing is an “invalid” . It doesn’t recognize the account (yours) as having access rights.

Here, you can see where it can’t talk to “MyPlex” (plex.tv) and get the information.

Did the account password change recently?

Were there other logs in that directory?
I see multiple scanner logs but only one server log. There should also be server logs.

No. I haven’t changed the password since I created the account over a year ago. Should I try changing the account and see what happens?

In the Logs folder, there is only one “Plex Media Server.log” file.

I would rather not. It’ll cause delays while the new password propagates through the cloud.

Since I see that this one log showed PMS 1.18.4.2171 having just been installed (it was still updating the database schema) I would like to do the following:

  1. Restart PMS
  2. Let it sit for about 45-60 seconds (that system only has about 3500 Passmarks performance)
  3. Now give it a shot at accessing the media directories.

If they aren’t there, please show me where/what is wrong in a screenshot . If it generates a hard error then Settings - Server - Troubleshooting- Download Logs will generate a ZIP for me which lets me see it at that moment.

“Restart PMS” does that mean close the browser instance running PMS and relaunch it 60 seconds later?

sudo systemctl restart plexmediaserver

Followup question: Where did you install PMS from? Plex.tv/downloads or the Ubuntu app store?

I’ve been trying to get Plex server working for DAYS! I’ve tried several different distros of Linux. I’ve tried several different computers/laptops. PMS used to work then quit after an upgrade a few months back. I have a folder of 7 different versions of PMS for Linux from version 1.15.6.1079 up to 1.18.4.2171. This install today was only the 1.18.4 version first. Then in frustration I turned to the forum… They were all downloaded by using the download option when it displayed at the top of the PMS server window.

My apologies if I am coming across as agitated. I am frustrated.

PMS quit working with .mkv tv episode files. I read that I needed to format the file names differently than I was and that helped but now nothing is working… Again, I apologize for my frustration.

Don’t worry about being frustrated. We’ll take our time and get through this one problem at a time.

I have a great deal of patience and understanding having been in your seat at one point myself.

Regarding the file names, if you’ll show me some of the names, exactly as you have it all named and structured, I’ll help you work that out.
If the names aren’t right, and you have a lot to do, I’ll help you setup FileBot (worth the $6/year license imho) to deal with media curation problems.

Okay, here’s what I’m seeing. I have no idea why there are now 2 Movie libraries!
There was only 1 before…

Look at the top center of the Window. “Recommended” is showing.
Click “Library” .

Let me know if it changes to your full library contents.

You no doubt have noticed my media server name. I learned weeks ago, from the client viewpoint, I had a problem naming a media server the same name if it was a different install.
