Plex on Nvidia Shield wont play 4k True HD or DTS master

Out of no where my Shild will no longer pmay 4k with True Hd 7.1 or DTS Master mkv rips

If i play a movie with the stereo or 5.1 track its fine. Just wont play higher bitrate audio. Keeps saying either

“An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”

Or
“Your server isnt powerful enough to play this video”

Wasnt a problem a month ago.

Any help to resolve this?

Not just 4k movies. 1080p blu rays wont play dts master 5.1 tracks. The stereo track and 5.1 dts is fine but as soon as I switch to dts master it bugs out

Works fine for me on my shield.

Plex Android TV app version? Displayed at bottom of page in app settings.

What changed from a month ago? Updated PMS, network changes, etc.

Some things to try:

In the Plex app, is Burn Subtitles set to Always? If so, change to Automatic.

Try a “network reboot.”

  1. Shutdown the Shield and your Plex server.
  2. Reboot the router. Wait for it to fully boot & come online.
  3. Boot Plex server. Wait 3 minutes for it to fully boot.
  4. Boot Shield.

My plex server is on my shield. Its on one the shield external hard drives

Not ideal but it was working before

Ill try now

That didnt work.

Its now saying Server not powerful enough to convert video

Plex displays that message when it wants to transcode video but (a) transcoding is disabled, or (b) the server is not powerful enough to transcode the video.

Have you disabled transcoding in the Plex Media Server settings?

Is there some other reason Plex would want to transcode the video - bandwidth settings inadvertently changed, unsupported video type, unsupported subtitle type, etc.?

The Shield should be able to transcode 1080p video, but is not powerful enough to transcode 4K media. It is also not powerful enough to tone map HDR to SDR (so disable tone mapping in the PMS settings).

Tried disablijg transcoding and renabling it. Also tried turning off HDR tone mapping

Any other thoughts? The kdd thing here is it used to work no problem. All of a sudden it stopped working. Thats the real clincher here…

Does the problem happen with all, or just some, media with TrueHD or DTS-HD MA audio?

Plex client app version?

Plex client app setting for subtitle burning?

Pull a set of server log files and android log files.

  1. Ensure PMS is configured for debug, not verbose, logging.
    Settings → Server_Name → General + Show Advanced
  2. Play a file that has the problem.
  3. Pull and post the server log zip file.
  4. Pull & post the android log file.

For anyone interested I tried everything here

I ended up disconnecting and reconnecting my hdmi and its now working again…

Does this make any sense at all?

Glad to hear it is working.

It does make sense.

When you connect two devices via HDMI, they perform a handshake, telling each other what video & audio formats they support (probably a lot of other stuff too).

It is uncommon, but sometimes the devices miscommunicate with each other, one device forgets what the other supports, etc.

Disconnecting / re-connecting the HDMI cable resets the interface and forces the two devices to perform the handshake again.
