Plex erroring when I transcode video from 4k

Server Version#: Version 4.48.1

Hey folks,
I’m running plex on a shield tv pro (2019), and things have been going great with all transcoding working properly. Lately (last couple of weeks), I’ve noticed that if I am direct playing content, everything works perfectly. If I try to transcode content from (for instance) 1080p to 720p, things work fine.

However, if I try to transcode 4k to 1080p, 720p, etc., this used to work perfectly but now continues to throw errors or buffer until clients time out, etc. I am escalating this with nVidia but thought I’d check here too.

My transcoding is happening via the Shield, though the library sits on an external HDD plugged into the shield since the metadata, thumbnails, etc. can get pretty large.

My content is stored locally on a Synology 420+.

Everything had been working fine until recently, without any changes that I am aware of, though perhaps some updates installed in the background. Any help would be appreciated.(File removed)

Plex did recently add HDR tonemapping. You’ve got some fairly large files and it might be too much for the Shield. Turn off the setting in Settings \ Server \ Transcoder \ Enable HDR tone mapping and see if that helps.

That did fix it. I hope the shield gets a hardware transcode option so I can use hdr tone mapping

The Shield was using hardware transcoding. My guess is the HDR tonemapping was too much combined with the transcoding.
