Synology 923+ runnig Plex Server v1.40
NVidia Shield Player v10.10
I rip all my BluRay/UHDs to lossless mkv files. I’ve just ripped Avatar (4k Atmos) and Life of PI (4k DTS MA 7.1) to the NAS and tried to play them through Plex client on my Shield. Avatar plays fine (as do many 4k rips), whereas Life of PI gives me the usual ‘Server is not powerful enough to convert video’. I’ve turned any type of transcoding off in settings. All I want is Plex to push the video to the TV and audio to the receiver. That’s all, don’t want it to convert or transcode anything. I would have thought 4k Atmos was more heavy than 4k DTS. I have tried via PC web browser and get same error.
Anyone know how I stop Plex trying to be clever and just stream? JF was giving me the same type of bother which is why I moved to Plex.
Do you have HDMI passthough enabled in app?
Do you have DTS and DTSHD enabled in the Sheilds own audio settings. ( im not positive it does DTSMA)
If you enable video transcoding, after playback starts you can look at the playback info in app while it is playing to see why the player app asked the server to transcode.
So I think the problem was coincidence in that it occurred after a rip and the confusion of one working and the other not led me to Plex. When I tried using VLC on the Shield, I found that the receiver (Denon AVR-7200W) was flickering between DTS and stereo but giving no sound. A couple of months back I bought an eARC to HDMI converter to allow my S90C to send full audio to my receiver via HDMI (receiver is only ARC). This had been working fine, but when I removed it from the chain (e.g. Shield → Receiver → TV) it all worked. Still can’t figure out why the converter was passing Atmos but not DTS MA.
Thanks for helping me double check it wasn’t Plex or Shield settings.
