Plex on OMV4

Server Version#: 4.1.32
Player Version#: ROKU

So I had OMV 4 and Plex running just fine on my old AMD X2 4200+ machine, but I moved around some files and accidently wiped my Plex database. I tried to reinstall, with no luck, so I decided just to reinstall OMV. I still can’t get Plex to start. After 6 reinstalls (4 x v4, and a v5 for giggles). I’m the furthest I’ve gotten so far though with the current 4 install. This is an old machine with 2GB RAM, so I went with the Plugin instead of Docker. Everything else is working great, but when I try to enable Plex and choose a directory it throws this error:

<< Failed to execute command ‘export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin; export LANG=C.UTF-8; systemctl start ‘plexmediaserver’ 2>&1’ with exit code ‘1’: Job for plexmediaserver.service failed because of unavailable resources or another system error. See “systemctl status plexmediaserver.service” and “journalctl -xe” for details. >>

and viewing details give this:

<< 1. Error #0:
2. I’m kinda at a loss. There wasn’t anything different in my install than there was in my original install that worked. I really don’t know what to do. I had it working perfectly and now this. I’m debating whether or not to try another install of OMV 4 (I tried 5 also in a earlier install and it didn’t work) or go with something else.

I find it all strange because when I installed OMV 4 and Plex months ago on this old machine it was super easy. I’m not sure what’s wrong at this point and could use some help. While my Mac & Win skills are strong, my Debian skills aren’t as sharp. I can provide whatever info and logs needed. Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

I am struggling with exactly the same issue. Could anyone help please?

The same here.

I wanted to replace my system HDD with an SSD und did a fresh install of OMV and PLEX.
Unfurtunately I ended exact with the same issue.

The OMV Plug-in no longer works, you can create an override.conf file to accomplish the same thing or allow Plex to install to /var/lib. Docker is the other option.

Thank´s for the quick reply, unfortunately I do not understand the answer.

What means “The OMV Plug-in no longer works”? Before changing my HDD to SSD it worked perfect.

Since I’m not really familiar with Linux I can’t do anything with your description. Could you explain more in detail?

How long ago did you use the Plug-in. Plex made changes to their installer such that plug in will not successfully install Plex, at least the V3.3 one, I looked for a later one.

If your boot drive has enough space (>250 GB) you can install Plex in the default location of /var/lib. If you would like to install it on your other disks then create an override.conf file.

I did the first installation of OMV and PLEX Server approx. 6 Weeks ago. For a short time it worked until my system disc (USB stick) became to small, although I’ve chosen a data disc for plex library.

Therefore I did a complete new install on an HDD. This was for evaluating Plex and I used an already existing old HDD as system disc.
All worked perfect but I didn’t feel well with this very old HDD, so I planned to replace it by an SSD.

Now - 6 weeks later - I replaced the HDD with the SDD and did a fresh install in the same manner than before, but this time run in the mentioned issue.
Exaxt the problem described by lewis_lewisfeinman_info.
I also did this a few times, I tried OMV 5.0.5, each time the same problem.

My SSD (= boot drive) is 521GB, so I may try your suggestion, but how to install plex in a specific path?
As mentioned before I’m not familiar with Linux. This is the reason I’ve chosen OMV with Plex-Plugin because setup was so easy and requires no linux skills.

Hi there,

have you tried installing Plex from the .deb package or, even better, from the deb repository?
.deb package:
https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

repository:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/235974187-enable-repository-updating-for-supported-linux-server-distributions/

I wouldn’t recommend going for the plugin - it sure is comfortable, but it adds another person to the delivery chain. The Repository is the best option for Debian-based OS’ like OpenMediaVault as it will update plex through the OMV Update Manager.

Many Thanks for the info.
I thought to myself, if I can’t use the Plex plugin, then there is no real reason for OMV anymore.
Since I was not completely satisfied with OMV anyway, I installed Ubuntu and then Plex Server as recommended.
Runs smoothly now. It was relatively easy, I only had to ask Google how to permanent mount my data disks.
But now it is running smoothly.

Hi all.

On start Plex see is same error.

My configuration:
openmediavault: 4.1.35-1 (Arrakis)
openmediavault-plexmediaserver: 3.8.2

My solution:

  1. Login to server via SSH.

ssh login@server

  1. Create empty file “plexmediaserver” in “/etc/default”.

touch /etc/default/plexmediaserver
chown root:root /etc/default/plexmediaserver
chmod 644 /etc/default/plexmediaserver

  1. Reenable plexmediaserver via Admin panel or restart service.

systemctl restart plexmediaserver

Good luck.

This totally fixed my problem (same as above)! Thanks so much. I have been shaking my heads for days!!!

That fixed it for me too! I was wondering what to do after trying all different solutions.

Thanks to mnu_mnu_org_ua!

Thank you so much mnu_mnu_org_ua I was able start using plex on my nas with your answer. So stoked to finally have it setup.
