Plex on PS3 is next to usless why??

Ok I have about had it with the app on the PS3 its completely useless!
Almost every video I try will either play sound but have a black screen or spit up a error that the video didn’t play in time, yet if I play the same videos via the DLNA server on the same console they work fine first time every time!!!

Normally I wouldn’t care I just uninstall the app and use the DLNA server but the PS3 is in my kids room so using the app is far easier for them as they can see things and find things better.

I have tried everything I can thing of uninstall/reinstall of app and server, I have re-encoded a ton of videos to supported formats of the console and nothing :frowning:

I don’t get what is wrong with it the app’s on my other device all work floorlessly but the PS3 just wont work.

Hey morpheus2n2 next to useless is pretty ouch. There’s got to be something explainable about your setup / videos / something. I’m pretty sure the app is far from useless.

We can help. Your free to vent too if you please but it’s harder to help.

I by default always use a 360/PS3 compatible format (very old habit). But the ones they didn’t work I re-re-encoded thinking it didn’t go right first time still with no luck.

When using DLNA some of them transcode the audio but the video has always directly played witch is why I’m confused cos surly using the app would do the same but it doesn’t.

As for the server
Windows 10 Pro
i7 950 @ 3.07GHz
24GB Ram
20tb Storage (500GB dedicated just for server cache)
1GBps Wired connection (only mobile devices are using wireless everything else is hard wired)
So yeah I think its ok ish lol

But what’s really bugging me is that everything will play perfectly fine on other devices with out any transcoding and will work fine on the PS3 via DLNA with minimal transcoding but the app just refuses to load a lot of stuff, when it dose work its fine but getting it to work its a nightmare :frowning:

I will clear my logs later and set plex to recorded them with out log tokens and post up.

Hi morpheus. Your server definitely looks like a beast. I’d love to have a machine like that around the house!

Take a look at your videos. If you’re playing MKV you’re out of luck for direct play; the platform just doesn’t support it. If the video stream is H.264 with a bitrate below the selected Local Quality AND the AVC level is <= 4.0 then the file will Direct Stream. The last bit, the AVC level, is what trips up most people. Most encodes pulled off the Internet or made from personal media set the AVC level to 4.1 or higher.

Bugs me too that the PS3 app is limited by such poor direct play capabilities. The DLNA player does a pretty good job but unfortunately our app can’t use the same playback system as the DLNA player.
