Video files working fine in DLNA but not Plex PS3

I"ve got some video files that play just fine if I play then on the PS3 via the DLNA server, but if I play them thtrough the PS3 app they just show a black screen although I can hear the audio.

Any ideas?

I don’t know if this will help in your case but I was experiencing the same problem, for me it started when I upgraded to PMS version 0.9.12.3. What I had to do to get it working was downgrade to version 0.9.12.2 and that seemed to have fixed the problem, at least for me.

I've been having this same problem for a few months so its not actually a new one. I would just go watch it via DLNA, but I prefer to watch it in the app because I can actually pause videos (in DLNA with Plex for some reason when I pause a video for 10-15 seconds or longer it crashes the video and I hae to start over)

Experienced this with a new video this morning. Still no idea what is causing this.

There have been some previous posts in this forum area about the same problem - most have been resolved by changing the DirectPlay / DirectStream settings. Have a read of this Thread for more info.

Tried all that with no success. Disabling DirectPlay and DirectStream in all combinations of on and off. Turned all the settings all the way down to 1Mb and still no video. Plays great over DLNA. I'll attach a sample of the video.

... well I'm trying to upload files but it keeps saying they're too big (around 7MB) and it says it can be up to 27.98MB so I'm not sure what's going on. Tried straiht MP4 and ZIP

I've also seen a few people have success by following the instructions on the "buffering" thread. This also includes instructions for media info and creating a sample video file.

If all else fails, upload to dropbox or similar and link to it from there :)

Alright here's some samples of different videos not playing right and the XML for them.

Andrew,

I can confirm exactly the same problems with playback on my PS3 as you are seeing. Audio plays but no video. None of the in-app settings for DirectPlay or DirectStream make any difference.

The videos do play through PlexWeb and PHT on my Mac without any issues.

The videos do play through DLNA without any issues.

On the WebApp Activity view I have noticed one odd thing that even with DirectPlay and DirectStream turned off on the PS3 the web console shows playback as using DirectPlay. Not sure if this is an anomaly in the activity view, or the settings in the PS3 app not being respected though.

I will try to do a comparison of the XML data with my other files later to see if I can pinpoint any differences which help narrow this down.

If any Ninja's are watching this conversation assistance would be appreciated at this point :)

Over two weeks and no one from the Plex team has any idea?

We've heard of this issue before but haven't been able to isolate the cause.

I appreciate you posting the samples and XML; totally responsible and helpful.

I'll be back in a couple days after investigating with your samples.

I know the forums just got back up, but wondering if there’s been anything about this?

Having this problem with pretty much any file I try to play with Plex on my PS3. Was working fine last week, but now even things that played last week only have audio and a black screen.

Any help is appreciated. I’ve heard disabling Direct Streaming in the Settings works around the problem.

I can confirm I’m experiencing the same problem, only on my ps3, ps4 works fine. Tried disabling Direct Streaming but that didn’t help in my case.

That doesn’t do any good. Still have the problem.
