Plex on raspberry pi4 - playback error. Conversion Failed. A required Codec could not be found or failed to install

Server Version#: 1.25.8.5663-e071c3d62 - installed on a Raspberry Pi via normal install (no docker); Raspberry 4B, 8GB RAM; attached 1TB USB3.0 external drive.
Player TV Samsung Version#: 5.34.1 (platform 5.5)
Player Mobile Android Version#: 8.28.0.30077
Server is made accessible from outside the local network, port forwarding is enabled.

I started getting error: “Playback Error. Conversion Failed. A required Codec could not be found or failed to install”

While on LAN / local side:
I’m getting the error “Playback Error. Conversion Failed. A required Codec could not be found or failed to install” on the following cases:

• 1. The Last Dance file MKV H264/EAC3 5.1/720p original resolution / * Bitrate 5016 kbps
• 2. Reacher file MKV H264/EAC3 5.1/1080p original resolution / * Bitrate 9144 kbps
• 3. CODA file MKV H264/EAC3 5.1/720p original resolution / * Bitrate 7976 kbps
     While for other files - play works no issues

1. Samsung smart TV, application installed.
   ==> 1 & 2 files above; Error - cannot play - Conversion Failed.
   ==> 3rd file above - play no issues
   

   

2. Mobile Android, via application
   ==> 1 & 2 & 3 files above - play no issues

3. Web Access on Edge, Windows 10
   ==> 1 & 2 files above; Error - cannot play - Conversion Failed.
   ==> 3rd file above - play no issues
   

While over the internet:
2) Mobile Android, via application
==> 1 & 2 files above; Error - An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.
==> 3rd file above - play no issues
3) Web Access on Edge, Windows 10
==> 1 & 2 files above; Error - An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.

What I’ve done:

1. restarted pi/plex server**; No change**

2. update pi to latest version & restart; (sudo apt update & sudo apt install); No change

3. manually deleted Codecs folder from PMS; After restart new codecs downloaded here again. Comparing initial codecs (deleted) with newer codecs downloaded automatically I can see that only this codec file wasn’t downloaded again libhevc_decoder.so
   
   

4. HDD where media gets downloaded is mounted via fstab as NTFS with options: auto, nofail, sync, users, rw (last row in image)
   

5. Found some faint info that noexec attribute could somehow limit PMS into the codec decoding. I have the noexec flag for this HDD (last row) but I am unable to get rid of it.

Don’t use /mnt or /media to mount your drives, they have permission overrides you have to deal with and the NTFS format isn’t helping. Linux Tips
