Plex on Shield TV not selecting 4K versions on 4K TV

I have 1080p and 4K files in the same library. When I start a TV episode or movie that has both versions using the Plex App on my Shield TV connected to a 4K TV, it always selects the 1080p version. Selecting the 4K versions manually plays them just fine with Direct Play.

Is this the wrong way to handle multiple resolutions? Should one store them in different libraries? Is there a specific setting for the Plex Android TV App?

Looks like other people had the same issue: Plex not automatically selecting 4k version - #17 by Mistraval

In there some suspected HDR to be the culprit, but then again, manually selecting the version plays it just fine, including resolution switching and HDR.
