Plex on Synology

I got a Synology DS 411+II (amongst other reasons because it would allow me to install Plex …) and have verything set up fine. I have a variety of media: Music (mostly mp3, but also some wma etc), Video files (mostly video_ts folders for various movies, but also avi, mp4 and mkv files) and pictures. I am able to access and stream all of my content with the Synology tools just fine both within my local wifi network as well as on the road, both via 3g and over other wifi networks.

But here’s my problem:

Nothing will play via Plex! I have it setup with myplex and it shows everything: cover art, file types, different folders. But once I try to actually play media I get an error message saying that plex can’t play the media. It doesn’T matter where I try to play. I have tried: my windows 7 desktop, an apple tv 2, ipad,

iphone - nothing works. any advice?

Thanks in advance! I really like the way plex looks and would love to get it to work, but am just about ready to throw in the towel :frowning:

Not really what you want to be hearing, but movies in video_ts format are not compatible with steaming (http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/PlexNine_PMS_Naming_Guide#ISO.2C_IMG.2C_or_VIDEO_TS_Movies) , they only work when the Server and Client are installed on the same physical machine. Some people have found ways around this, based on their specific setups, and there are a number of forum threads on it (I believe the key is to make sure the server and the client have the media located at the exact same path)

For the other media types that you have, it would be useful if we can see your logs (which i believe on synology NAS’s are located here -> “/volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs”. The specific log we want is the “Plex Media Server.log”

Can you restart your server, play a non video_ts media item that doesn’t work (which sounds like everything) and then attached the server log to the forum? It would be best to do this with your Windows 7 client initially as it will rule out anything related to the transcoding which may or may not be involved.

Thank you, that was very helpful! I have tried other types and they seem to play just fine.

I have read rumors in other threads about an iOS client being developed for Plex that would be capable of handling conversion on its own. If those rumors are true, can you say anything about a possible timetable until such a client would be released? Also, are there any plans to enable Plex to handle ISOs or VIDEO_ts folders?

Thanks again for the swift reply!

Dennis

I personally don't now the answer to that so best to hope for a dev to reply, though it would be rare to see them give dates or comment on un-announced features. My personal experience with Plex over the years is that it is a well supported product with frequent updates and well worth sticking with as it grows.

Alright, thanks for replying anyways
