I have all movie media in a volume on Synology NAS cant get it to play on Plex

Server Version#: 4.66.1
Player Version#: 1.25.0.5246

First of all - Divorce is close. I have read and re-read everything on this forum for 3 weeks! sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. I have a Synology NAS that has DSM 7.0.1 installed - I have 4 bays - 3 used W/ raid 5 set up. I have gone through SO MANY installs and re-installs but nothing is working. I can get it to work on my laptop and then onto the Apple TV Plex app, but then all of a sudden it won’t work anymore. I have the synology connected directly to the modem also. I need serious help. I have spent over 24 hours putting 1700 DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs onto my NAS. HELP! WHAT AM I MISSING

Let’s start with some more details…
You have your PMS installed on a Mac (what version of macOS?) and point it to the shares on your Syno NAS – is this correct? I’m not quite sure I understand at what point you’re struggling… is this issue about the PMS not seeing your media / failing to read/access it? Or is your media recognized and properly catalogued but fails to play – if so… is it not playing at all or giving you poor quality… other hiccups?
Any error messages?

Bonus question: are you only experiencing this issue on your Apple TV or other apps too? What Apple TV model / tvOS version and Plex for Apple TV do you have installed on that box?

Mac version - os 11.5 .and yes the PMS is installed on all he devices and has worked. I get to the point from time to time where you can see my server called DonatelloNas for example, last night I had my MacBook Pro opened and Plex opened on my Apple TV and we were halfway through the new venom movie and I shut my laptop for some reason and it just immediately stop the movie??? All media is in perfect shape and downloads and streams at a perfect rate. The Error messages are “not available” in red or when I go to set up the path to where I want the torrent to download to I can’t find the right path. volume, data, plex, movies. I seem to have no issues with any of the Apple products. I think I’ve just done so many things so many times and watch so many videos that I’ve got something screwed up. The main goal at this point is that on everyone’s laptop here at home can just logon to Plex and watch all the movies that are saved on the Synology NAS.

Leaving for a few hours… no rush on reply. but would love to figure this out today! driving me absolutely bonkers!

Just double-checking… is your server running on that MacBook Pro or on your NAS (I’m a bit confused due to the name “DonatelloNas” ).

If the server is running on your MacBook Pro and you shut that down / send it to sleep, that will also terminate all streams currently managed by that device.

So the only PMS should be installed on the NAS? then all other access the movies by logging it to plex.tv/web? I have set up the Plex server step-by-step on the Synology Nas with all the correct settings.

You can install your server on different platforms or even install multiple instances (which will then indeed be completely independent, e.g. no synchronized watch status/watch history…).

My question was more aiming at understanding your setup.
Generally you have a single server on a device that can stay “always on” (not necessarily literally “always on”). Once this server is installed and setup, you can access its media from the clients on your other devices (e.g. through the browser or desktop apps on your MacBook Pro, the iOS/Android mobile apps …).

The server will manage the actual stream – the Plex apps are not picking that up independently from the NAS. Therefore the PMS needs to remain running while you’re streaming media.

I am thinking I might be closer to understanding this. I know that I installed the beta version of Plex on my sinology Nas. But that should stay running. I believe it has stayed running but the only question I have is that were using Eero to mash our entire house. So at this point I have the Nas directly plugged into the modem not plugged in to the gateway Eero.

so what would you suggest the first thing is that I do? Because all I really do not want to do the took so much time was to get all those darn movies on my NAS.

I have a similar set of equipment as @donatelloa so let me layout how I’m setup and maybe that will help?

I have Synology running DSM7 and Eero mesh handling routing\network\wifi (combination of wired devices and wireless). The Synology is connected to a switch which is connected to the Eero Primary (router). ISP->Modem->Eero Primary (router)->Network Switch->Synology

I have Plex Media Server (PMS) installed on the Synology.
I have my Movies stored on the Synology at /volume1/Plex Media/Movies/

I follow the Plex directions for naming and organizing them.

I have Roku and iOS devices using the Plex Client as well as iMac using Plex for Mac for watching my movies stored on the Synology Plex Media Server setup.

The Synology acts as the only Plex Media Server and is also the storage for my media. The client devices (Roku, iOS, etc) connect to the Plex Server hosted on Synology. This works really well because the Synology is always up and available. The Plex client apps on iOS and Roku connect directly to the Plex server hosted on Synology - I just sign in with my Plex account and it’s there for me. Plex for Mac works better for watching movies than plex.tv/web on my iMac (for me anyways).

I manage the Plex Media Server itself either via the Synology Hosted Plex web client (log into Synology WebUI\Desktop and click the Plex icon) or using https://app.plex.tv (the Web client at app.plex is always a newer version of the interface than the Synology Hosted version so it can be more reliable).

Is your setup the same as mine or different?

If you grab your logs that may be useful… maybe not.

Hopefully this helps.

Ok, here are a few pics from my nightmare. I am SOOO close to getting this. I just need to figure out HOW my NAS PMS is the main on all the time server. I have put in my logs! I have no clue what you will see but have at it,. Please dont give up on me! I have so much time put into this it has to work. VENMO$ for he person who helps get this working no lie!
Let me know if you need any other files or picks. My Synology 520+ is now hooked up to the Gateway Eero.

Looks like might have mismatch of movie locations.

  1. Where are your movies stored on the Synology?
Path like mine - /volume 1/Some Folder/Movies - write out or screenshot yours.

  2. Where is Red Notice looking for the movie file?
Click the 3 dots next to the pencil icon and then “Get Info” … it will have the path:

Those two storage locations need to match up and be available in order for the movies to be found.

You might also want to grab the screenshot for your Movies library settings like you see mine in the previous post - that will tell us where your library is looking for movies.

For the unable to connect - check your PMS settings in the Remote Access section. Click the wrench in the upper right of Plex web interface and then Remote Access on the left - similar to when you grabbed the logs. What’s it say there? Screenshot might be easiest for that one.

The folks here are helping out because we were helped too… @tom80H has helped me bunches of times. Don’t worry about payments.

  1. Movies are stored on NAS @ volume1/data/plex/movies

They DO NOT come close to matching up. they are a mess! I think i messed things up when I would login on my MacBook Pro to the server and and I was having trouble following the right volumes etc. finding the right pathways

Finding the correct media pathway is always a problem? I am taking a pic of my physical set up also. here it is.

So… you have Red Notice as an example earlier of “not available” but you used Terminator for the movie path… so now we have to ask, is Terminator also showing “not available” in your Plex?

Try not to hurry through this, it’ll help avoid repeating things. :slightly_smiling_face:

The paths actually do match between library and the Terminator example so they should be fine as long as that folder is available.

Now. Did you add a drive from your computer to your NAS and then add that to Plex instead of copying your files to the NAS? That would explain things of you did… adding the folder of your laptop to Plex just links it, doesn’t copy or move it. Does that sound familiar?

It’s also possible if you recently upgraded your NAS that you haven’t updated the new permission settings. Have you recently updated to DSM7? You’ll want to make sure you set the correct permission otherwise Plex can’t see your media… follow these instructions.

Also, go to your account page on Plex and screenshot connected devices… it’s possible you have two servers setup. That could also explain some things.

I put all the movie files on an 8tb external drive and used the HUB transfer app in the package store to transfer all 1500 movies from external to the NAS.

The nas is new and had dsm7 in it already.

when you want a screen shot of the"connected" devices - is this what you mean?

ALSO i have no problem and I am on vacation so I have time, to delete and start over AS LONG AS I dont lose the videos on the NAS drive, If you can recommend the best HOW to video - with a Synology 920+ OObe modem connected to an EERO pro.

So only one server in devices… that’s good.

I’m not familiar with the Hub transfer package… normally I’d have just copy/moved the files using the file manager in Synology.

I think to start you need to follow the instructions I linked for updating the permissions for Plex. If you missed that step then Plex can’t see your movie files. Follow the link in my last post for that and follow the steps. That can be the cause of your issue.

Be sure you can navigate to your files on your NAS … use the file navigator on Synology to go look at the files and make sure where Plex is looking is where they really are located. Screenshot the file explorer to show us, might help. It’s possible you added the external drive to Plex, not the local folder on Synology.

Edit:
I think it will be beneficial if you take a moment to pause and go through some of the previous posts here because you’ve missed lots of steps and questions so we can’t give you suggestions for what to do next without understanding where you are now.

I would suggest you start with this right now:

Where are your video files?
Specifically state - without relation to the Plex software - where are your video files stored? Physically stored. If you needed to browse to the files to delete them … where are they? Specifically. Some of your statements (and results) indicate you’re not actually storing your video files on the Synology but it’s hard to tell by your answers and screenshots… no more Plex screenshots for now. Only screenshots from the Synology File Station or your Mac Finder. Right now Plex doesn’t matter and the modem never did…

Just take a breath … a pause… and if someone on this thread asks for a piece of information and you’re not 100% sure how to get it, ask. Folks are happy to help but it gets trickier if you get in a rush and skip around or start new things before we’ve resolved the earlier stuff.
