Plex on TV LG 2023

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: 5.74.0 webOS 8.2.0

Good morning,
I have a problem with Plex on the LG G3 (Earc, HDMI bitstream enabled to Denon 4800H on TV audio), the files (.MKV) Dolby vision are not recognized… Too bad. Dolby trueHD (.MKV) files are re-encoded to PCM 2.0. I have no problem with files with DTS 5.1 or DTS HD 7.1 formats… Why not put an HDMI passthrougth option on plex webos like on Nvidia Shield or other google TV?
Regards

Those are LG restrictions.

LG wants DV in a MP4.

They do not support passthrough of TrueHD audio from TV based apps.

TV apps use fake dolby Atmos? In EAC3? Too bad now that the DTS passes, we cannot enjoy the uncompressed Dolby.

Yet the TV does support all formats in HDMI Passthrough. Doesn’t Plex have the ability to hijack this to use the TV’s HDMI Bitstream output? Or is it up to LG to authorize this?

There are two forms of Atmos for home theaters: TrueHD + Atmos, the type found on Blu-ray discs, and Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos, the type used by streaming services such as Netflix.

No TV (LG, Samsung, Sony, etc) supports passthrough of TrueHD audio from TV based apps.

TVs may support passthrough of TrueHD and/or DTS formats from devices attached to HDMI inputs. This is what rtings.com tests.

If you want TrueHD + Atmos and DTS-HD MA/DTS:X, you should acquire an Nvidia Shield Pro. It will passthrough both audio formats. Other streaming devices - AppleTV, Roku, Amazon - will not.

Ok, that’s what I thought after my tests, my Panasonic bluray player will work live on tv without audio problem. I have a pro TV shield but the AV1 does not pass and in fact I hope to remove it by taking the LG G3 but I realize that I will have to keep it. Hoping for a new shield with AV1 support or a change of vision of the manufacturers of TVs.

On the other hand the DTS HD ca does not bother the plex application since the dts is not used in streaming applications, so it is not concerned by this limitation?

I’ve a 2015 Shield Pro. It still works great, but also wishing Nvidia would release a new model with AV1 support, etc.

The Amazon Cube v3 and FireStick 4K/4K Max 2nd gen support AV1. They passthrough TrueHD + Atmos. Unfortunately, they only passthrough the lossy DTS 5.1 core, so no DTS-HD MA/DTS:X.

LG removed DTS support for several years. It was not supported by TV apps and blocked for HDMI attached devices. On these systems, Plex would transcode the audio.

LG added DTS support to new models, like yours, but I’ve no idea how they handle it. The Denon front panel display should show you what audio format is being received. Their mobile app may also display the info.

The main thing to watch out for with the Plex LG app is that if the audio is transcoding, enabling any type of subtitle results in a video transcode. So, no TrueHD + subtitles. This is another longstanding limitation of the Plex LG app (I’ve a 2017 B7 OLED, and it has existed at least since then).

Plex Dashboard → Now Playing + Expanded View will show you if Plex Media Server is transcoding the audio or video.

Hello, frankly for dts or dts HD no problem since Plex with my G3, the amp recognizes formats and it does not transcode. I activated the dts option in audio on Plex. LG just called me, I put the topic link in the mail. According to them, there is no blockage at the trueHD dolby level at the application level if the application gives the possibility. For the mkv and the dolby vision, they answered me when it was according to the encapsulation of the dolby vision :thinking:I am spectique… They escalate the issues, I would have tried. I would like to have a Plex manager and know his opinion on the dolby trueHD.

The email summarizes the conversation with LG:

Dear Mr *****,

Thank you for contacting LG France Customer Service.

As a result of our telephone exchange regarding your LG OLED65G36LA TV, we have agreed to:

I explained that LG Apps is dependent on application publishers/developers: LG is not in charge of their development, support or maintenance.
In fact, we do not manage how these applications encapsulate their files and the codecs used. I have asked you to take this fact back to the various publishers so that they can study the phenomenon.

I explained to you that at WebOS level, LG does not lock any audio signal via the pass-trough.
After checking, I also confirm that the Dolby Digital True HD is supported by the BitStream format of the TV.

On our side, I made a factory feedback regarding the use of the pass-trough under the reference VCU231221030783_01

I hope I have helped you and remain at your disposal. On behalf of the LG team, happy holidays.

I invite you to answer our satisfaction survey below, where you can leave your comments to improve our quality of service.

Good morning,
I would like to have the opinion of someone at Plex on the response of LG saying that there is the possibility of doing Dolby trueHD on applications on Webos.
Thank you.

Why can’t Plex on LG play files with AV1 video codec? I have no problem with youtube Webos for AV1. For Plex on Pixel 7, I can read the AV1 without transcoding. I give up plex with the shield, to switch to a Zidoo Z9 pro with their Home theater interface that works with all image formats and sound without transcode. Good continuation or end to Plex.

Can you guys check into my issue as well? I’ve noticed that when TrueHD 7.1 or DDP 7.1 are transcoded to EAC3 the channels are not correct anymore.
Front channels are okay.
Side and rear channels appear in front
LFE doesnt work

Can anyone with a surround system try on their LG?
