LG C2 no sound with DTS MA

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Just got the C2. I know it doesn’t support dts passthrough. I’m not using a receiver just the tv. I have a bd mkv with just dtsma. Shouldn’t plex transcode the audio? There’s no sound. Tried deselecting dts checkbox, direct play, direct stream.

Unfortunately Tv sets after 2018 don’t support DTS. MA/Master Audio is probably 7 Channel, which often will have no Audio, in the viewing settings does the title have a AC3 option?

Update to latest version in LG app store.

Do not select checkbox for dts audio in Plex app

Leave direct play and stream enabled.

Plex should then transcode dts audio.

App is latest version. I re enabled direct play and enabled info and sound magically appeared.

I think it is something with alexa.

Question - the lg c2 will pass dolby atmos via eARC. But will it send it from an app on the tv?
Or does it have to come from an external set top box like the shield?

The Plex app on the LG will not passthrough DTS or TrueHD audio formats. It will passthrough Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus, including DDP + Atmos (used by Netflix, etc).

The LG C2 will not passthrough DTS audio formats for devices attached to HDMI inputs. See the C2 review at rtings.com and search for “Audio Passthrough.”

If you are looking at adding a receiver/soundbar/etc and want DTS/-HD/:X and TrueHD/Atmos audio:
a) The receiver/soundbar/etc must have an HDMI input
b) The receiver/soundbar/etc must support the desired audio formats.
c) Acquire an Nvidia Shield Pro* and attach it to a HDMI input on the receiver/soundbar/etc.

*
The Nvidia Shield Pro and Xbox will passthrough TrueHD + Atmos audio. General consensus on the forum seems to be that the Shield Pro is the better overall Plex client.

Do not use the Shield non-Pro “tube” model. It is not as capable as the Pro model and has issues, such as audio dropouts, with high bit rate 4K HDR media.

The Amazon Fire TV Cube 2022 3rd Gen will also passthrough TrueHD and DTS audio formats. However, DTS passthrough is not currently working. Plex must update their Android TV app first (date tbd).

I do not want to connect any type of device to the tv. As far as the tv apps go (hbo max, netflix, disney, hulu) these apps on the tv will pass atmos to my receiver through earc? Is it a different kind of atmos than what would get sent from an external player?
I don’t have or plan to have any atmos content via plex. Sorry for the redundancy here. I just want to make sure I get this right. Thanks for the help.

There are two types of Atmos audio for home use:

  • Dolby Digital Plus Atmos (EAC3 + Atmos), the type used by the streaming services.
  • TrueHD + Atmos, the type found on Blu-ray discs.

The Plex app on the LG will passthrough EAC3 + Atmos over HDMI-eARC or HDMI-ARC.

The Plex app on the LG will not passthrough TrueHD or TrueHD + Atmos over HDMI-eARC. This is a TV manufacturer restriction. No known TV supports such capability. When playing a TrueHD audio track using the LG Plex app, it will be transcoded by Plex Media Server to a supported format. Atmos information, if present, is lost in the process.

I have an LG B7 OLED: LG ← HDMI-ARC → Denon AVR-X4300H.

The Netflix & Amazon apps on the LG both pass Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos to the Denon.

My gear pre-dates HDMI-eARC, which will also pass Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos.

Thanks man! Is there a big difference between the earcatmos vs the truehd atmos? I’m thinking about getting a new receiver that supports atmos, but with only content i watch coming from the apps on the tv, I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it.

If the only source is TV apps then it may not be not worth it, since TV apps do not support TrueHD audio. Definitely make sure the receiver supports EAC3 + Atmos.

Does TrueHD from a Blu-ray sound better that streaming Dolby Digital Plus? Yes. It is a much higher bit rate and bit depth, so it should. I have some nice speakers and I can hear the difference. Is it earth shattering? Would I sell a kidney to get it? No.

That written, think about any upgrades, etc you might want in the next few years.

I bought my Denon about seven years ago. I picked one model higher than I needed to get some extras I’m now using (extra audio zones for backyard speakers, etc). I did not have any media with TrueHD + Atmos at the time, but the receiver supported it.

I later picked up a Shield Pro because of the subtitle limitations of the LG Plex app (audio transcoding + subtitles = video transcoding = no HDR). With the Shield came support for TrueHD + Atmos audio.

Basically, I didn’t plan for an Atmos audio system, but I ended up with one. It sounds nice and I’m glad I have the capability. Looking back, I still wouldn’t sell a kidney to get it, but I’m glad I dropped a few extra bucks along the way.

Hope that helps.

That helps, thanks man!

@FordGuy61 do you by any chance have a write up on the shield pro? I have a denon 760h on the way and want to try atmos. And I’m bored with the dd+ coming from the lg plex app.

Any known limitations with the shield pro? Anything I should know?

I’m trying to preserve a true 1-remote setup (wife + kids) (this would be the shield remote). If the shield goes to receiver and then to tv, will the receiver and tv turn on when i turn the shield on?

There are a couple of bugs in the Plex Android TV app or Android TV you might run across.

Seamless Branching: This has to do with how different cuts of a movie are stitched together on a blu-ray disc. I’ve run into it on a couple of 4K HDR rips, usually on an extended release / director’s cut. When you hit the bug, the audio will noticeably go out of sync with the video. You have to stop (not pause), then restart playback . Best I can tell, it requires a fix for Exoplayer, the Android TV video player (a Google, not Plex fix). There are several threads on the topic, such as this one.

There is another bug where VOBSUB subtitles, the kind found on DVDs, do not render correctly. They are incorrectly positioned on the screen and may not be completely visible. I’ve very little media with VOBSUB, so not sure if this bug still exists.

Other Shield Limitations

I use the Plex and You Tube TV apps on my Shield. Rarely any others. Both of those apps work very well.

I’ve the 2015 Shield, which does not support Dolby Vision. As a result, I still use the Netflix & Amazon apps on the LG.

Denon

Take the time to use the microphone and perform the audio setup. It made a noticeable difference on my system.

I have all the video processing turned off in the Denon. I let the TV perform any necessary upscaling, etc. I’ve played around with the settings and can’t really tell that much difference with them enabled/disabled.

The 2015 Shield does not have the AI Upscaling capability like the 2019 version, so not sure how that comes into play.

Basically, experiment and use what you like best.

LG

Connect the Denon to the HDMI-ARC/eARC input on the LG TV.

Check the LG’s settings for that input. Make sure it has a wide color-gamut. It should configure that automatically, but never hurts to check. Note: This is on my B7, which is several years older and running an older version of webOS. I don’t know if that setting exists on current LG TVs.

One Remote

You can configure the TV/receiver/Shield to power each other on/off, control volume, etc. It is part of the HDMI specification (HDMI-CEC = Consumer Electronics Control), and has been available for several years.

I press the power button on the Shield. It powers on the Shield, Denon, & LG. It also switches the Denon and LG to the correct inputs. I press it again and everything powers off. The power button on the LG remote does the same.

Volume up/down on the LG remote (or TV remote) controls volume on the Denon.

I have not tried using the LG remote to control the Shield - switching apps, etc. In theory it is possible.

On the LG B7 it is configured in Settings → General → Simplink. Two options. First enables the feature. The second enables Auto Power Sync. I’ve both enabled.

Denon: Configured in Video → HDMI options. HDMI Control = On. There are some other options you can configure to fine tune things.

Shield: Settings → Display & Sound → Power Control. Several options about how the Shield should behave. Probably start with all enabled, then fine tune as needed.

Thank you! I would imagine the plex app on my other sony 900h tv using android os would be the same as the plex app on the shield?

In regards to seamless branching, I have run into this before in regards to playlist obfuscation using other media players (Wdtv live). There would be a slight pause every time it would switch to a new title. Which was unwatchable with tons of titles in an mpls. I have not noticed this (or the bug you described) on with plex client on the sony android tv nor the lg. I hope the same is true for the shield plex app.

Thank you so much for this info!!!

Yes. Same app.
