I’ve been using Plex for years and have never seen this before.
Movie directory X has movie X.m4v which plays correctly with VLC.
I click play movie X in Plex app in browser in windows 7.
Plex plays a movie, Y, that is no longer in the Plex directories. I have no idea where this is coming from.
Clicking “get info” for X shows the correct path to the movie.
I have refreshed metadata, emptied trash, deleted cache directories - no joy.
I have exited PMS, deleted directory X, restarted PMS - the movie no longer shows up.
Then I exit PMS, restore directory X, restart PMS - the movie shows up, “get info” is correct, etc., but clicking play starts up a movie that no longer exists.
Perhaps I am losing my mind. (Just kidding.) (I hope )
I don’t know if I created an optimized version for movie Y. Typically I don’t do that, but who knows. If I did would that cause this problem? Could movie Y have been cached somewhere?
"Include Cinema Trailers from movies in my library " is checked for “only unwatched movies”. I’m unfamiliar with the trailers bit - does Plex automatically play trailers?
All movies are on a single hard drive inside the PC case - nothing external.
This is just the server setting. There is also a client setting which determines the number of trailer to play. Normally, you will only get trailers automatically with a Plex Pass, but if you happen to have movie trailers as files beside your movie files, then Plex may use these.
Please post the content of the Plex XML info of the affected movie.
So if you copy this path into the Windows file explorer address bar F:\usr\PlexMedia\Movies\A Christmas Story\A Christmas Story.m4v
and press Enter, it will play the right or the wrong movie?
btw, which Plex client type are you using to watch your media?
I deleted the files in Plex and in the Plex movie directory.
I converted the .m4v file to .mkv.
Now it works.
Very strange - I’ve never seen anything like this before.
I really appreciate you’re investigations and have a nice Christmas Story this year.
