Do you own an xbox 360? It supports Media Center, Hulu, netflix, PBS, Comcast, Verizon, RedBox, Nick, Fox, HBO2go and tons of other movie services that have movies and media.. it also still does local media playback via dlna and windows media player. I don't think MS has any inkling of limiting resources/services right now.
i can almost bet ya that if plex tried, they could get the plexapp on xbox 360 even :)
I own one, and haven't started it since 2007 due to many factors, one involving red lights and one something more in line with me getting even higher hairline due to powerful winds...
But yes, one can get the apps approved by MS for the 360. Much like for the PS3. But as mentioned, the cost is substantial and is not a one-off cost either. Both MS and Sony charges one heftily to start with, and then it just continues. That is something a big company can gamble with, but a small startup must be fairly sure about the cashflow to take such a risk.
Again, I am not saying that Plex Inc. won't go this way. They very well might be (I have no idea how big cash-flow they have now, if a gamble into this is feasible or not). I just want to make sure people are aware of that one can not simply create an app, send it into MS and Sony and then that is it. That is not how it works. I know that you know it, but many who reads this thread needs to know it as well.

i know it's not easy, but its also not that hard. Plex should join the Microsoft bizspark and especially on the games side, microsoft has already said they're hooking people up with dev kits, prodividing free/discount publishing and interested in working with people and if Plex needs help coordinating these efforts i could help do so, but again, it just seems like prior to this year Plex had no ambition to do much if anything microsoft related.. for all i know every plex core dev is a mac addict and they all run mac book pros and only one dude who long left the company/project had any interest in windows / surface / windows phone.
i'm just one dude who sits on twitter and shows up to some meetups and from my perspective the big expensive bully microsoft image is pure bs, especially over the past 12-24 months.
There are also other ways to make the expensive part absorbable by the community.. i believe there are more than enough plexpass subscribers who could have committed a few bucks to make a kickstart campaign a viable alternative to any costs of certification on 360 or ps3 if there was interest in doing so, but i don't know the road map and it doesn't seem publicly available.
Oddly enough, we just learned about the Windows Phone 8 plex client update from Microsoft before we have seen/heard any committal from Plex

Plex Ninja... KICKSTART IT! ;-)
I would be more than happy to back a project at about a 50 dollar level to see a native PLEX app for XBOX One and the PS4. I imagine others would back that as well.
+1 For Plex on X1 .... DLNA seems to be built in though, surely that will help? :D
I get my XB1 tomorrow (Wife is a senior level DBA for them) however we leave tomorrow night for a 10 day vacation, if I have time and I can hook it up I will let you guys know how DNLA works on it.
There are disappointments to be had. The Xbox One supports Play To streaming from Windows 7 and 8 PCs via DLNA, but there’s no way to pull content to the system from a PC directly (though the Xbox One does support playback of almost any file your Windows PC recognizes as media, whether music or video). This is a major step back from the Xbox 360’s robust local media playback capabilities.
This might actually be enough to reconsider my preorder.
Yeah actually I would pay like 100 bucks and provide the developer with storage space/vps to work on if need be. I plan on getting an XBone and if we can make plex work on that especially well where I can stream full on blu-ray remux rips from my local server through my XBone, that would be like the greatest thing since Peanut Butter.
Microsoft needs to streamline its app store. The process for developing and submitting an app for Windows 8, Windows Phone, and Xbox One should be the same. Obviously the apps would be different since the interfaces are different, but the process should be the same.
