Plex or not to Plex (newbee)

I am considering switching from Emby to Plex and to be honest for one reason but will ask my questions.

  1. I have an NVidia Shield Pro 2019. Does Plex need to run as a “server” on it or can I host all that on my physical Windows server and just run a PLEX client on the Shield?

  2. Subtitles. If I have an MKV file with all the subtitles set to No for default. But I have an English subtitle (full) and an English subtitle that is forced and contains the translations just for the foreign language voice content. How does PLEX handle this? Does it automatically play the forced subtitle? Would I have to manually select it when playing? Since the full subtitles for movies doesn’t contain the forced content, would it play the forced for the parts that are forced and if I had it on, play the rest with the other subtitle file?

Above is my main problem. Emby I think used to do this but you have to manually select a forced subtitle to play it, so then obviously you can’t have the full subtitles on and also get the forced so would have to one, remember to turn the forced on for any given movie, and then switch to the other when you want.

  1. I’ve already paid for a lifetime of Emby but is what it is. if I switch is there a cost for the version of the app that would run on a Shield TV? If so if I buy the lifetime does that cover it or is there a separate charge?

  2. I have a bunch of YouTube videos that I download locally. With Emby I created a file for each video that contained the metadata that it would at least take since it can’t pull it in on any metadata search.

<movie>
   <title>4 Rides You CAN&#39;T HATE in Disney World</title>
   <premiered>2021-04-26</premiered>
</movie>
  1. If it can do this, and I delete a YouTube video thru PLEX does it delete the video and the “nfo” file from the server?

Thanks.

JR

Plex is free to try. Just try it.

  1. you can run your server on another computer and only use the Shield to run the client

  2. Plex manages language preferences for audio/subtitles centrally on your account. You can e.g. configure it to prefer English audio and subtitles but only show the subtitles with foreign audio (=forced subtitles)

  3. Plex Media Server and the big screen clients are free

  4. Plex will deal with embedded metadata but it’ll ignore other metadata files (1 exception: Plex will look for external references like an IMDb ID in an existing nfo file to match the file; Plex will however not use other metadata from that file).
    There’s a long-standing feature suggestion to add full support for nfo files.

  5. if you delete files from within Plex (needs to be enabled for the server), Plex does not remove related local extras/assets.

Plex honors the forced flag for subtitles in MKV files. You can set the flag using MKVToolNix or other such tools.

Plex remembers subtitle choices. So, if you turn off forced subtitles, switch to a different track, etc., Plex remembers that choice the next time you play the movie.

No. Plex plays one subtitle track at a time.

If your subtitle tracks are text based, srt/ssa/etc, you can combine them using Subtitle Edit or similar tools.
