Objective: share my content with friends
What do I need to share the content from my server (drive) with others? If I get the Plex Pass can they access the content on my server (drive) with their device as a free user or do they need the Plex Pass also?
You need your router properly set up to port forward to your PMS
You need to Claim your server under Sever settings.
Your remote users need a Plex account.
You must send them and invite thru Settings Users.
Your users do not need Plex Pass.
On ios devices and Android the Plex app costs 2.99$ without Plex Pass
Okay, thanks. I will have to figure out how to do all of that or if someone could kindly point me to the instructions. We already have the paid app but not the Plex Pass. The devices are iOS and Android for mobile and Apple TV for the television.

Plex Pass is neither necessary for sharing with other accounts, nor for remote access.
Without Plex Pass, the restriction what is shared can be only done on a per-library basis.
With Plex Pass you can do it on a per-item basis.
So, you’re saying that with the Plex Pass then I can share each movie individually instead of the whole library, correct?

I have a followup question on this thread. Does this also apply to other users who are using an IOS device to access the content? Ie: if they log into the IOS device with their own username/password can they still get access to my content I am sharing with them?
It is not specific to IOS (they can use whatever client they want to use to watch).
And yes, the user can have their own Plex account (a Plex Pass for their account is optional). Once you invite them to view your library (or libraries) you can select what you want to share with them within each library. You can share different items/libraries with different users.
