I’ve been a long time Plex user from the beginning and am thinking of getting the lifetime Plex pass but am not sure how the licensing works. I have Plex server installed on a computer for now, and my wife and I both have iPhones we want to use with it to download media to use offline. To do this I know we need the Plex pass, but do I buy one Plex Pass for the server, or two Plex Passes for each of us. If it helps, we’re set up for family sharing under the Apple Mac store. Buying one license is a fair bit of coin which I could probably do, two lifetime licenses wouldn’t be worth it.
I think I finally found the solution (had to figure out the correct search keywords) and use Google. According to this article, I should only need one Plex pass per server which would include both my wife and our phones:
Plex Pass is per user account and one server is claimed by one account. Depending on how you setup your wife (own account or managed account) she would need an own PP.
Wha? I’m confused, this is contrary to what was mentioned in the link I provided. In that link they say that there are no user accounts, only server accounts.
I want one server, and be able to have two separate iPhones (two separate Apple IDs, though on family sharing) connect to it and download media to the phones.
You’ll only need one Plex Pass, even if you wanted to set up several servers.
Just make sure to add your wife into your Plex Home. Either by creating her as a managed user, or by inviting her existing plex.tv account into your Plex Home.
