Ok, so I have an idea for a PlexPass feature:
I've been using iFlicks 2 to convert my media to iPad/iOS compatible formats. I know that Plex takes care of metadata and all other infos in a wonderful way, but the raw files do not change at all. Often times they are in an .mkv or .avi container and so are unusable for iTunes transfer to an iOS device. Furthermore, many of the video files have exp. 7.1 surround sound or multiple audio tracks on them for multiple languages. This is often times unnecessary and just pushes up the file size.
Like already stated, I've been using iFlicks 2 to have my database tidy and with metadata outside of Plex (for the times when I just want to give it to somebody or use iTunes) and I would love to see Plex with a similar feature.
It would be great to have an option like "Watched Folder" and as soon as I put a .MKV (or any type of video file that is not exp. .m4v) in it, it gets automatically transcoded to a certain preset that I choose and after transcoding it, it deletes the original file using only the .m4v file (which is often times smaller than the original). Plex would implement the metadata inside the file itself and I would be able to select the preset quality that I want.
This would mean:
- More cool features for PlexPass would make your product more valuable
- "Keeping your media clean and tidy" would mean "Keeping your media clean and tidy to the core"
- It would be a completely automatic process without the need to have extra transcoding software
- Should someone chose to export their library to a computer without Plex, all the metadata would be all there and everything would look awesome
- It would save a lot of time for the user to convert this manually and move them afterwards into the Plex folders
- You could use some kind of "Plex Optimum" preset that is guaranteed to play well on many devices using your software or even iTunes
So, what do you think?
