I want to install Plex server on my PC to check it out. If get a lifetime pass, and then decide to install the server on my NAS or X10 router or even Amazon cloud, can I move my pass to that server?
All of these will be to serve up the same media (home movies - some in 4k as smartphones now increasingly support that resolution, pictures, mp3 audio).
So, What is a Plex Pass subscription associated with? My username? The hardware signature of the device running the server?
Is there a FAQ that describes how to migrate the server to different locations/hardware?
There is no need to buy a Plex Pass right from the start. Plex server can be tried out quite well without it.
A plex pass gives you access to the more advanced features and services.
But fundamental evaluation of Plex should be started without Plex Pass, just to avoid frustration if some incompatibility with your hardware or internet connection shows up.
The Plex Pass is bound to your plex.tv user account.
As soon as a server is ‘Signed In’ to this account, it gets the benefits of your Plex Pass.
You can have several servers signed in to your Plex Pass enabled user account.
Migration of plex data to a completely different server platform is something only very computer-savvy and “Plex-perienced” users should try.
If you search in the forums here, you’ll find some threads dealing with this challenge.
Thanks for your help. I’ll cross the migration bridge when I get to it.
For now, I plan to have my media reside on a NAS (which I will upgrade soon… I need more space), Plex server on my PC desktop, and access the media from PS3, Hopper 3, Denon 2312ci receiver, Vizio E and D series smart TV’s, iPhones and iPads.
