Plex playback broken with 480p on new Shield Update

Server Version#: 1.32.5.7349
Player Version#:9.29.1.3463
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

With the new update on the Nvidia Shield, playback is broken with 480p sources if rate and resolution switching is turned on. Playback from 1080p and 4k sources works as normal. This is repeatable with multiple files that worked perfectly previously.

Note, this is with app data and cache wiped, and a Shield restart. Playback works fine at 480p if I restore app to factory default and worked perfectly on previous Plex version. The problem was 100% introduced with version .3463.

Hi, would you be able to provide your client logs and possibly a sample file? Here is how to get the client logs. I have been unable to reproduce it with 480p content.

Thanks Morgan, please see attached logs from the playback device (Nvidia Shield), my server (Win 10 PC), and here’s a Dropbox link to a sample file: Dropbox - Plex-SampleFile.mkv - Simplify your life

I’ll reiterate that turning off Frame Rate and Resolution Switching “solves” the problem and 480p content plays fine and that I never had an issue with this until this .3463 update.

Thanks!

Thanks, I will try to reproduce it. What exactly happens when it tries to play?

The video goes to a black screen with a large white pause symbol and it will sit there forever. If I manually play, then the video plays mostly OK but there is no audio. When this happens, if I go to Playback settings, it says that Plex is Transcoding because Direct Play could not be started.

Again, this doesn’t appear to be happening with 1080p or 4k content, and it worked perfectly with 480p content until this .3463 update. Thanks!

Ok, I have been able to reproduce it, though intermittently. I am filing an issue for it to be looked at. Thanks for reporting.

Thanks Morgan, I’m glad you were able to at least partially reproduce it!
