Player Version#:Plex for Samsung 4.1.1
So a little over a week ago I decided my sister has struggled long enough with her 2012/13 Smart TV, it was time for an upgrade so I bought her a new Samsung TV and setup Plex. I’ve set it up to auto-update software which is why I’m guessing her player version is same as mine (was only installed last week anyway) but the thing is that everything she plays gets transcoded first for some reason whereas other people using my server can directplay using android boxes. Here’s an example of what happens when she plays:
Now in her settings we set all the quality settings to ‘Original’ and ticked the boxes to allow for direct play and direct stream yet on the server side all I see is transcoding, why is that? Am I missing something here?
That screenshot shows a bitrate limit of 2 Mbps. Either a setting isn’t correct so that it is using a lower bitrate, or your sister is unable to create a direct connection to your server and using the Plex Relay connection which has a 2 Mbps limit.
Yeah, it’s been requested. It already shows on the client end, so I personally don’t see what it couldn’t be shown on the server side, but that’s not my call.
great! if the OP screenshot above included ‘plex relay’ connection and link to article, that would have pretty much identified the issue and provided the solution.
Now THIS is one interesting read, wow! Ok so I’ve disabled secure connections completely on my server, nothing is currently being played but I’ll keep an eye on things next time she connects. IF this still doesn’t resolve the issue then I know in the player on the TV side there’s an option for preferring secure connections so I might need to disable it on that side too when I visit her again but from what I’ve described and from what I’ve read in the article link this definitely does seem to be the problem. Thanks for the help so far Plex Forum users.
The secured connection has little to do with the relay connection, so I would not expect changing that setting to affect anything. Next time she connects, grab the PMS logs. That will show how she is connected.
See here’s an example of another user on my server though…android box and this was with my ‘secure’ connections set to preferred so I’m thinking I might have to check settings in her player.
The article you sent me says:
Tip! : In order to use Relay, you need to have the Secure connections preference on your server set to either Preferred or Required . Secure connections cannot be disabled.
So I took it from that that if I DON’T want to use relay then I need to disable the secure connection, am I understanding this incorrectly?
Because here’s the more interesting part. My sister’s ‘transcoding’ connection is from a different ISP but using the same network provider…whereas the direct play example you see here is different ISP and different network provider.
