Plex Player on Mac - QtWebEngineProcess high CPU & Player GUI sluggishness

Server Version#: 1.26.0.5715
Player Version#: 1.44.0.2981-e2d72ac2

MacOS#: 12.3.1
Hardware#: MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max

UPDATE: Still occurring many months and versions later.

High CPU usage from the QtWebEngineProcess, no matter if Video is playing or not, is constant whilst Plex is running (at about 40% CPU) stops when Plex shutdown.

GUI is sluggish also.

Reported by a few other people in various forums. Any ideas?

Another day and still QtWebEngineProcess is taking up high CPU when Plex Player client is running but without any navigation or video playback.

Hoping that someone from Plex might be able to comment.

Ah yes, I can confirm I am having the same issue with this exact process. Mine is around 47%, M1 Pro.

2019 Macbook Pro 16", same issue, however when a 1080p stream is active for about 5 minutes, kernel_task starts to kick up to 300-500+% CPU usage to the point where even the mouse is unresponsive until the video is paused.

MacApp Version 1.45.0.3013-1676042f
Server version Version 1.26.2.5797 for linux with 1060 TI GPU transcoding (did not apply for recent videos)

Same for me on a M1 MacBook Pro. Hopefully the player will be Apple silicon native sometime soon. :crossed_fingers:

Server: 1.27.0 (1.27.0.5897)
Player: 1.46.1 (1.46.1.3056-ab91bdc0)

macOS: 12.4
Processor: 2.7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5

It’s not just M1/Apple Silicon.

As Plex Player stays on, QTWebEngine just keeps eating CPUs even if I’m not playing anything in Plex Player. I’ve seen it pegging 12 cores (reported as 1150% CPU utilization).
