Did you read ANY of this thread? You are so completely off the reservation.
The issue here isn’t transcoding nor server capabilities. It’s ANDROID TV Plex App not performing a DIRECT PLAY (non-transcode!) when it should, even on a FAST LAN.

Oh, well I apologize for not seeing that this was specifically for a player on an android TV. After running Plex since it was brand new I have discovered that most issues with the program are with server misconfigurations, because I’ve run Plex through all kinds of software players, usually it works through just about anything but sometimes there are a couple of platforms where nothing works. But I’m not deleting anything, goodbye
So this is the software installed on a proprietary system, sorry, I didn’t understand that.
Thank you for being polite with your response. As long as the software is still being developed they should be able to fix it with some kind of patch and a new version.
Yah, once again I apologize, I pulled up the forum after not being in here for a while and they have changed the labelling system. I thought I was in the general area, didn’t see that this was a specific issue with a proprietary system, assumed it was the plex player in general. In which case, my response was valid for that. I hope they get it fixed, and sorry for the ruckus.
Some troubleshooting results from my environment: I am using a DTS 5.1 audio .mkv file which is hosted on a Windows 10 laptop hardwired to the switch.
I am playing a local network stream to the nVidia SATV box Plex client over wifi AC.
3 scenarios in all:
1:
I uninstalled all updates to the Plex client so landed on Plex 5.6.
Playback with audio passthru to my LG 5.1 soundbar and I can playback without stuttering and I get DTS playback.
2:
Install Plex 6.12 and I have stuttering with 5.1 DTS passthru but if I force no passthru and land up with 2.1 PCM at the LG, there is no stuttering.
3: 7.15 (latest)
No matter what combination I put - there is stuttering.
Had somebody asked me this politely in the first place instead of insulting me? I would have been happy to do it, but due to the extremely rude response I got, I am not really inclined to do anything about it at this point. Tell you what, he deletes that comment? I’ll delete the whole thing.
You just said “Thank you for being polite with your response.” and now you’re saying everybody’s insulting you? Which is which? Make up your mind if we’re polite or not.
FYI I have updated my Nvidia Shield 2017 (regular version) to SHIELD Experience Upgrade 7.2.3+ Test Image.
It did not fix the issue for me. Still getting the “Your connection to the server is not fast enough …”
This is with Direct Play local content using a gigabit wired network and an i7-4790 tower acting as Plex Server.
It seems to me like we are going backwards with this problem. Any input from the Plex moderators or developers would be appreciated.
Disconnecting my LAN cable from the Nvidia Shield and plugging it into the TV’s ethernet port the inbuilt Roku Plex client plays the same 4K or 1080P content flawlessly … sigh
OK guys - so I troubleshooted and solved the problem for myself but it required me to draw ethernet over to my nVidia Shield TV.
In the interest of full spec information - here is my setup:
Google Wifi (new) 2 pucks. The main puck (connected to the cable modem) is connected by ethernet to an Asus rt-n66u wireless router working in bridge more as a switch (since I now have the Google Wifi mesh system). This Asus router (now a switch) is running TomatoUSB firmware from 2014.
My Plex Media Server (IBM/Lenovo 8GB/i5) is connected via ethernet to the Asus switch.
The nVidia Shield TV Pro (2017 edition) was originally connected to the network using wifi.
In this setup, I got sustained FTP speeds from my laptop to the SATV of approx. 15MBps/150Mbps.
I have been unable to stream any AC3/DTA media to the nVidia using even Plex client 6.12 without the stuttering/slow network speed issue. From Plex 6.12 onwards, I had to downgrade the audio to ‘no passthru’ and lose AC3/DTS channels to be able to view files. With 7+ even that did not work.
Yesterday, I took a gamble and drew an ethernet wire from the Asus switch to the nVidia SATV and all my stuttering problems are completely gone. What’s happening now, is that the SATV is streaming from the Lenovo PMS without going through the Google Wifi puck. I suspect, these two hops or something about my switch was breaking something for Plex. This has solved my issue and I can now use this again - I am not going to change the Asus device for a newer/another switch which was going to be my next test.
My suggestion to is to try changing the switch out or the wifi router from the equation and test. This does not of course absolve Plex/nVidia of their ineptitude IMO. I feel your pain and frustration with something so basic but I also suspect that the ‘slow network speed’ is a rolled-up catch-all error for failures across many different network tolerances for which shame on the developers.
Good luck and I will continue to follow this thread.
I feel terrible for all the poor people who don’t read this forum and aren’t aware of this bug so they literally spend hours trying to debug an issue that they almost always have no control over.
Running Plex Media Server on a Windows machine with i7 processor.
I am running Plex client on my Nvidia Shield, and I’ve never had this issue until recently. Now, the error is displayed and playback is stopped every 30min or so.
I have tried downgrading Plex server, client Android app, even rolling back firmware on my router but nothing is solving it.
For now, maybe use the Kodi app with Plex for Kodi plugin installed.
That’s what i’ve been using for a while. It works quite well and does all of the good refresh rate switching, HD audio passthrough that i want.
So I bookmarked this thread, and I check back on it whenever i see a new update has been released.
