Plex Player - "Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video."

Receiving “Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video” on Fire TV. Never had a problem until about 3 weeks ago. Updated to newest version, still not working. About ready to cancel my membership. Unreal.

if you want I can give you my ftp to download the file in question. in private please.

Rather than doing that, just make a 5 minute sample and upload it to a site like We Transfer. Here’s the steps:

Helpful message from Plex:

Hi, Michael
Very sorry you’re having trouble. We have thousands of Fire TV users successfully using the app; there isn’t a general issue affecting Fire TV users.

So I guess Plex’s answer is simple - “we don’t care”

aka “Welcome to PLEX!!!”

“there isn’t a general issue affecting Fire TV users” lol I guess that’s actually true in a general sense - at any given time, the number of various general issues affecting fireTV users is much larger than 1.

Same issues for me on movies that were working before.
I also noticed that it has affected some MVKs I tweaked.
By that I mean, I had a few DVDs (both Home Alone movies; I know for sure) that didn’t play in the proper resolution on the TV.
They played boxed both vertically and horizontally.

I had found tho that I could use MKVToolNix to modify the header of the MKV file to change “Video Display Width” from 640 to 853 and then they would show on both of my Firesticks in proper Widescreen.
Just tried them, and they are back to being boxed again.
I checked the header and it is still 853, so Plex isn’t handling that the same way it used to handle it.
That isn’t critical (I can convert them I suppose) like the choppy playback is, but I just mention it as another sign of something that has changed…

Added: Well, I’ll keep watching Plex for an update, but as the stuttering was making it so I couldn’t watch the movies, I decided to try something else.
Loaded Kodi on my first generation Firestick and pointed it at my library on the NAS.
Seems to be playing fine. Haven’t; watched a full movie yet, but so far so good.
Even Home Alone seems to be showing in full widescreen again.
As I don’t currently plan on streaming outside of my home network, I’ll see what happens moving forward.

Having the same issue with my fire stick and fire box, everything is up to date and has been rebooted. The fire box is hardwired. I am so frustrated right now, what happened? Everything has been working fine until a week or so ago.

Same here. Started a few weeks ago, now it’s 50/50 if any of my movies will play without rebooting the fire.

Ditto. Been using Plex without any issues until around 4 weeks ago. All of sudden movies I have previously watched with no issues won’t play. I’ve spent hours trying to resolve this. Finally gave up and switched from my FireTV to an old Roku box I had laying around and everything is good again.

I’d advise to stay on 6.12 for any Android / Android TV device, ExoPlayer v2 is still way too buggy.

I also have the same issues with the FireTV app in my computer room. Currently running 6.15.2.4143. The Fire TV in my bedroom (also running the same version I listed) I was seemingly able to fix it by clearing all the data from the app and was able to watch movies that have been recently played. I did this for the Computer Room Fire TV and did not make a difference. i attached the log of me trying to watch said movie. If I select a movie I haven’t played yet, it will play just fine. Also playing the video on a computer or phone does not cause any buffering issues. Both of my Fire TV’s are running wired on a gigabit network.

I have been looking into this and struggling to replicate the issue myself. Would you be able to grab some logs and create a sample that has the issue?

Also would be good to know if you disable refresh rate switching if the issue goes away or if it’s still a problem?

@sixones, I’ll pass on the bit of information I figured out about why Exoplayer 2 has been failing for me with the “your connection to the server is not fast enough” Previously all of these files worked fine 6.12 and older versions on my fire tv 2 boxes. Buffering and video failure happens within 20 seconds of starting the video for the 2nd time.

The problem still exists on the latest release plex server on windows 10, and 7.03 on fire tv.

  1. One reason you might be having trouble reproducing this is the first time I play a file the on screen fire tv info says that direct play failed and, direct stream for both video and audio is used. This results in the file playing fine the first time, but failure if you stop and then re-start the video. The file always fails with the error the second time it is played.

  2. if you quit playing the video ( i.e. play the video a second time after stopping the first time playing) it now try’s to direct play and thinks it succeeds. No fallback occurs to Direct Stream on the second play attempt.

  3. With both my h264 mp4 files and hevc mkv files with subtitles embedded in the same file, even though I’m not trying to view sub titles, when the file tries to direct play on fire tv it doesn’t seem to process the subtitle track in the stream correctly, this is why I think case number one above works, since I’m assuming the subtitle track is stripped out since it’s using direct stream instead of direct play.

  4. As an experiment I stripped the subtitle track out of the mp4 and mkv files and they then play fine using direct play every time. The only difference is that there is now no embedded subtitle track. Note that both video and audio are copied so their streams should be identical to the original problem version of the files minus subtitles.

  5. My suspicion is with the VOBSub problem threads, and the threads about having to play a file twice this may be all somewhat related. Using MediaInfo, one of the problem files lists 1 video stream: AVC, 1 audio stream: AAC, 3 text streams VobSub/VobSub/Vobsub. The file was produced using DVDFab 10 software with pretty standard settings. Pasted below is the file info using the MediaInfo utility returns for one of the problem files.

  6. Since I did not want to track down and strip out all of my embedded subtitles I’ve been transitioning to other software but I wanted to pass on this info because as frustrating as this has been maybe this info will help others and or get the problem solved.

also refresh rate switching had no impact on this.

Wow thanks for the detailed explanation, that is a big help! From your analysis it sounds like subtitles are the problem even if you are not displaying them. Would you be able to create a sample of a video that struggled to play with the subtitles in? It will be a big help in figuring this out!

Steps on creating a sample are available here, only use the MKV steps: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/#toc-2 Once you have created a sample, could you confirm the issue exists by playing the video via Plex. You can also share the full file with me (if thats easier), feel free to send me a direct message with the files.

I recently started receiving this message locally and remotely " Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video". My Plex Server is running on a Dell T20 XEON Server. I have all recent updates.

Do you also only see the issue when the video has subtitles embedded inside and don’t see it at all for videos that don’t have subtitles?

I believe I’m experiencing this same problem. Never thought about the subtitles. I think that could be it.

I am experiencing this with no subtitles. When I launch Plex via Kodi add-on no issue.

After further investigation I believe my problem has do with the file but I’m not 100% sure. Why the file played correctly via Plex add-on under Kodi but not the app.
I played a few other videos of the same format and all played correctly using the app.
I will need to dig a little deeper.

I am encountering the exact issues on files that have no subtitles (home video recordings) so I don’t think it’s soley based on that.

If you are experiencing this problem, can you please grab logs from the Android client and share them with us so we can investigate. Details on your setup would be helpful as well, including the details of the video you are trying to play.

Information about gathering logs is available here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/
