Plex Players for Laptops (Image artefacts of some kind)

There’s been visual artefacts on videos played back on devices and the severity of said artefacts seems to be related to the limitations in display nit output. Watching a certain show that was HDR tone-mapped on my friends laptop showed what looked like horrible clipping on the image (but the highlights were discoloured). On my laptop this was reduced almost gone until I looked for it and then I could see those artefacts.

This could be a few things it could be HDR tone-mapping not working as it should.
Also may have something to do with Plex using GPU 0 no matter the scenario, which leaves the dedicated GPU at idle.

This sample is from my laptop and not as bad but on his things are unwatchable. This only happens with HDR content and mine was specifically 10bit x265. I hope this helps with diagnosis, all the best.

Mind sharing some more details about that setup?

  • which exact Plex app are you using (app, version, platform/OS)? – e.g. Plex Media Player, Plex for Mac/Windows, Plex HTPC, Plex Web…
  • which version of Plex Media Server do you have installed on your server and what platform is that?
  • what GPU are you using on your server?

My Laptop;
Version: 1.37.0.2706-5b2cfe50
OS: Windows 10
CPU: Intel i7 8550U (Intel UHD Graphics 620)
GPU: GeForce MX 250

Server;
Version: 1.24.5.5173 (Updated)
OS: Unraid 6.9.2
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: GeForce GT 1030
Driver: Production Branch v470.86

Both systems are Intel based and Core i7 skews. I only have detailed info on my own.

Friends Laptop;
Version: Latest (Installed yesterday)
OS: Windows 10
CPU: Intel i7 Unsure (Intel UHD Graphics)
Dedicated GPU: GTX 1050ti

That’s the version of Plex Web when accessing your server through the hosted version (https://app.plex.tv/desktop). The server version should be listed in Settings > [Server Name] > General.

Oh my mistake, Version: 1.24.5.5173
