Plex playing from a shortcut

Please excuse me if this has been asked or discussed before.

In an effort to try and conserve some space on my server (I have 0.4% free space right now) I’ve been trying to come across ways of conserving space.

Currently, I have duplicates of a LOT of data in an effort to seed data, and host my “cleaned” Plex library.

My latest venture is to see if Plex has any ability to play a shortcut (speaking in the terms of windows).

For example:

Plex server scans the following file \server\media v shows\episode.lnk, which points to \server orrents\seeding\episode.information.x264.avi

Would Plex be able to play a file in this manor? If not, does anyone have any further suggestions on how to handle this?

Plex already works that way.
It doesn’t copy the media files when you add them into a library. Instead, it only creates a pointer in its internal database to the original file.

Yes, you can also add media on a network share into a Plex library.
Although if you are using Linux, you’ll have to find out yourself how to ‘mount’ a network share into your file system.

This doesn’t require me to point my Plex library to \server orrents\seeding\ does it?

If that’s where your media files are, then yes, it requires that.

If that is a torrent library that is also a destination for downloading then it is not a good place to point a library to. The incomplete downloads may really screw things up. But if it just the location where downloads are moved to after the download is complete then you should be OK for movies. If TV shows are involved then it is a quite different story because Plex requires a very specific structure for TV. Having said that even movies generally are not detected correctly by Plex if they are named as torrent files typically are named.
