Adding Folders to Library

So…am i to understand that you can’t just point plex to specific folders and say ‘add these video files to the library’? YOu have to manually move all your existing and new videos to the plex folder? and lose all the organization you did? I upload photos and video from occassions to my NAS…so i have to remove the videos and put them in a seperate location? That sounds like a big no thanks. Am I wrong? I hope.

I’m not quite sure I understand from what angle you’re looking at that or what you’re currently trying to achieve.

The way Plex works is you point your library to one (or more) folders you want it to monitor. Depending on your configuration it’ll then automatically add newly added files to your library or do so when you trigger a scan for that library. There’s no need to link every file individually to a library.

Not sure what organization you’re worried you might lose.

I don’t know where you got this idea from but it’s wrong.

The procedure on Synology is:

  1. Give Plex permission to read the shared folder(s) containing your media
  2. Create the library section and reference the top of the shared folder (or top-most folder within the shared folder) which contains the media

Please observe (from my development DS418) -

I create my “Animated Movies” library section, of type “Movies”.
I reference “/volume1/Animated”.

Done.

Brilliant.
I followed the instructions that said to just allow Plex folder to be accessed by internal users.
THANK YOU.

To confirm:

On DSM 7 - Grant “System Internal User” PlexMediaServer permission to read
On DSM 6 - Grant User Plex permission to read.

Then add the shared folder / path (top directory) to the library section.
