Plex pulls incorrect metadata

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

On some of my TV Shows it is pulling metadata from a Movie with the same/similar name. It still allows me to play the show but does not list episodes

Ie: I have Charmed - the 2018 TV SHOW about witches but it is showing metadata for a Movie called charmed -

Based on your logging it appears that you have at least of couple of issues:

  • You’ve got all of your media stored in a single directory.
  • Your directory and file names will likely need some changes in order to work well with Plex.

To start, it would be best to create at least two separate directories to hold your your movie and TV series content; for example:

C:\Movies\
C:\TV Shows\

Then, organize your movies and TV shows inside those folders, following the guidelines at the links here:

For charmed, you might do something like:

C:\TV Shows\
    Charmed (2018)\
        Season 01\
            Charmed (2018) - S01E01 - Pilot.ext
            ...
        Season 02\
            Charmed (2018) - S02E01 - Safe Space.ext
            ...

For a movies, you might use:

C:\Movies\
    Tenet (2020)\
        Tenet (2020).ext

There are utilities which can help you name your media in a Plex-compliant manner; Filebot is very popular.

If you use the examples above, when creating your movie library you’d add the C:\Movies\ directory; when creating your TV series library, you’d add the C:\TV Shows\ directory.

Thank you so much!!!

As soon as I put them in two separate directories all the metadata worked itself out. I didn’t even have to mess with the formating of the shows, seasons, episodes etc.

No problem, glad it worked.
