Hi All,
Is there a way to use Ram for the “transcoder temporary directory” on a Synology Nas?
Just wondering if this option is available - from a performance perspective, thanks.

Hi All,
Is there a way to use Ram for the “transcoder temporary directory” on a Synology Nas?

It’s possible to use it but:
On a Synology, performance is usually limited to the CPU due to audio or subtitle processing.
Most Synology NAS models have a 16GB RAM limit. Not much video will fit in there with the OS and PMS already running.
realistically, 64 gig ram is the minimum total ram you would want to have before attempting to use a ram disk or ram tmpfs.
ram disk is not to increase performance (unless you have incredibly slow disk, in that case, fix your disk performance).
ram disk is mainly useful to avoid unnecessary SSD writes for all the temp transcoder files, for people who have SSD system drives.
To add to Tekno,
The typical single HDD can sustain 100+ MB/sec at minimum while SATA-3 drives sustain 150-200+ . Using 100 MB/sec as the measurement point, this translates to an effective 700+ Mb/sec of video. That’s a lot of simultaneous video transcodes before saturating the disk.
of course, one must also take into account, what other disk activity is going on outside of plex (if any).
plex alone may not saturate a disk, but plex on an old, but busy server, may be hitting or getting close to its random IO limit, if multiple applications are read/writing a lot a the same time.
Of course, if that is a case, then user should be looking at splitting up the IO load across multiple different disks or arrays, or splitting up the different applications to separate server entirely.
The reason i ask was because of this clip, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_Pc_4SahWg please see 3:39 into the clip.
I understand all the other limitations to the NAS’s hardware and other factors, this is purely a curiosity questions, as I know Synology Nas’s are based on Linux and not a customer system, so it maybe not supported, just asking.
he just says essentially what is already said above.
as far as performance, I believe he is overly implying or exaggerating the performance improvements, the bottleneck in any normal situation is your cpu upload speed, and transcoding to ram is not going to speed up your cpu upload speed.
And if you have gigabit upload, why are you transcoding anyway (fix your remote users settings).
as far as if it is possible or the specifics of trying to do it on your synology, sorry I have no idea, I don’t have one and never used one.
again, I would not bother with only 16gig ram, but I would make sure that your plex transcoder folder is pointed to one of your non-ssd drives/arrays.
OK thats good enough, thanks.
LAN isnt the issue, its trasncoding when im out or if I have friends with bad connections connecting. Not to worry, thanks anyway
