Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Since right around Christmas I’ve had a few really odd issues with my plex server.
-
Plex keeps randomly crashing, I need to go into unraid and restart the container for it to come back to life. It did this last night and the night before around 3-5 times in the space of a couple hours. Although the last 2 nights were particularly bad usually its been more like 1 or 2 every day/other day. Before these issues it was once in a blue moon and usually caused by me doing something too intensive on the same box.
-
Sometimes movies won’t play at all for friends, not always the same movies, sometimes one movie won’t work and then the next day it will.
- Samsung Smart TV (I know built in TV apps are garbage but this one had been working fine enough for over a year prior - “Playback Error - An error occurred loading items into the play queue”
- iPhone - “Playback Stopped - Couldn’t retrieve the play queue for this item. Please try again.”
- Sometimes I can semi replicate the issue, locally on chrome browser on phone/pc or windows pc app I’ll try to play. I’ll just get the movie backdrop + a spinning loading circle with no media controls for maybe 30 seconds and then it’ll start playing except when it starts playing Plex & Tautulli don’t show anything as playing. I think maybe on the devices that quit they have a timeout and maybe the browser/windows app doesn’t which is why it does eventually play?
- I no doubt think there are other devices having issues but those friends just aren’t reaching out to let me know.
- My TV library doesn’t appear to have any issue whatsoever, thinking it’s related to file size I’ve tried playing some episodes that are larger then some movies and the episodes are fine but the movie has issues.
My Plex Server Specs:
- Unraid 6.12.6
- i5-11600K
- 64GB RAM
- Linuxserver Plex Container + iGPU Passthrough
- All containers have their appdata running on a PCIE4 NVME drive that is only used by containers.
- Home internet speeds are 1Gbps down/up
Thing’s I’ve tried to fix:
- Add new Movies library pointed at same file location
- Optimize database + Chuck PlexDBRepair Script
- Build entirely new plex container from scratch
- Move resource intensive VM that was running on unraid onto entirely separate system
- Split apart unraid cache nvme, now PCIE4 nvme is only used for container appdata. Everything else now uses a seperate PCIE3 nvme for cache
- Modify Plex-Meta-Manager to be less intensive, used to apply ratings to every movie/epsiode/season/series poster file which took maybe 4-5 hours, now only applies dual language text to posters where applicable taking maybe 30 minutes
- Moved transcoding to RAM instead of to NVME
- Tested PCIE4 NVME disk speeds, showing as average 5.7GB/s read & 4.1 GB/s write
I’m absolutely stumped at this point on what the issue could be and could really do with some help.
The only thing i can remember that happened around the time the issues started is that i redid my cutoffs/custom formats in Radarr & Sonarr and over the course of a week or two replaced a bunch of files. Maybe one of the movie files is corrupted and somehow causing issues with other items?
I’ll attach some log files that I’ve saved down just now, just before saving them I personally tried playing “The Family Plan” on Chrome & the plex app on my PC, in both cases it loaded for 30ish seconds and then started playing but doesn’t show in plex. I also asked a friend to try various movies from his iPhone, one also being “The Family Plan” and in his case his never started playing and he had the “Playback Stopped” error message.
Hopefully the logs also capture plex repeatedly crashing last night between 21:40-22:15 & the night before between 21:30-22:45.

TL;DR, plex randomly crashing, random movies randomly won’t play, random movies randomly do play but don’t show up as playing, tv shows no issue whatsoever. Set up entirely new plex container and issue persists.
