Plex Media Server Crashing randomly, unsure why

Over the past week or so I’ve noticed that randomly while streaming/browsing my server (usually remotely), the Plex Media server exe just stops running. Sometimes relauching it fixes it, but other times I need to restart the pc. was running beta when I noticed, installed public over that, still continued, so switched back to beta, still continued. PC is up to date as far as I am aware, course perhaps a random driver is the culprit, no clue at the moment. Please help!

Windows 11 Home, fully up to date

Server Version# 1.40.5.8796:
Player Version# 4.135.2:

Happening here as well. I’ve noticed today that trying to watch Live TV either through the web interface on the server PC or via my XBox will crash the server. I had just accepted the latest update for “install tonight” yesterday or the day before (currently running 1.40.5.8829).

This is still happening after a full restart and I’ve noticed that I have no problems playing Live TV through my HDHomeRun app.

I have seen this too where it seems Plex just stops. I assumed it was attached to my issue where my server goes nuts when playing a title but maybe one is connected to the other.

In my case there is a behavior change on the Roku Plex app as well. It is no longer transcoding multi-channel EAC to stereo. It works just fine and I think it sounds better but I notice this is all going on about the same time for me.

This is a brand new issue for me. Appears to have started after the last update and has persisted everyday since then.

It appears to specifically be an issue with remote access so far. I disabled remote access and it hasn’t crashed since while I’ve been doing local network streaming. Could be I’m not stressing it enough though, but just my current guess.

I have discovered that my server will crash anytime I try to watch Live TV from my HDHomerun tuner. This is a recent issue and it occurs whether I try to watch Live TV from any device, PC, Roku, Android.

As a security guy I might suspect it could be remotely happening. Not to say it is but its worth looking into. Maybe reenable it but cut the actual access to it just as a test.

Mine is anytime I play almost anything. I can watch the resources go bananas while a movie is playing. The transcoder is not running but CPU/RAM/NIC go nuts until it runs out of mem and the PC reboots. My install has run fine for years so not sure what’s changed.

I am at the point I have nothing left to try. I am going to wipe my server and rebuild it. I have not used Plex in a few weeks due to this.

Hmmm transcoder… most of what I stream locally is direct play, so maybe the transcoder is shot right now? I haven’t even looked at the transcoder settings page in forever, perhaps there’s something new that’s causing the crash.

I have this happen without the transcoder was my point. I have watched my movies direct play audio and video and my server goes crazy until it goes boom and falls down.

Oh sorry I misunderstood.

Been having it happen only when audio is transcoding, video transcodes are working fine. A problem when using the browsers and they need to downsample from 5.1 to stereo. Gets about 30s and then the process for Plex crashes and closes.
There is a Tautulli script I’ve been using to auto start the process again, been using it a couple of years now but had to tell friends and family who are using a browser to switch to the native apps as those seem to allow direct play of the 5.1 audio, preventing the crash.

I just started getting an error stating “The server is not powerful enough to convert video” out of nowhere. double checking to see if any of my hardware has failed but everything seems to be running normal.

Never mind that, might have had the wrong setting unticked on transcoder page, I’ve got local streaming again. Still don’t trust remote yet.

I wonder if that’s tied to my issue. Like right now I tried to play a simple movie. Just an MP4 encoded 264. It’s direct play audio and video. As soon as it starts to play I hear the fans go full force in my Plex box and then shortly there after the video will cease because the CPU/RAM go nuts. Now to be detailed, this time it recovered and started playing again.

In my case its like it’s an insane burst of activity. I don’t know what the box is doing unless its trying to transfer over the entire file at once. The NIC will hit a 1GB or so. But it’s a 2.5gb NIC and so is the source of the media. That tends to indicate in my mind its not a raw transfer something else, say Plex, is processing the media keeping the transfer rate low because that “processing” is bottlenecking at the cpu/ram.

But I have no clue what that is.

I rolled back to 1.32.8 . Same behavior on my end so it must not be the version of Plex but something with Plex within my own install. I am just going to rebuild it.

Mine also started crashing randomly and repeatedly about a week ago. The problem immeditately followed the last update.

I’m just going to downgrade to the last version and see if it persists.

Similar issue here. I will go to sleep watching things locally, no issue. Wake up and try to play locally again and the server isn’t reachable. Once I open my PC, I see the PMS icon is gone from the taskbar and I re-launch it. It’s been going on for a few months and a relaunch keeps it working for a few weeks at a time. Any help from the Plex team looking over these logs and other folks would be greatly appreciated!

Had it online for a few days and it hasn’t crashed yet, perhaps the latest patch helped?
