Plex normally recognises most albums I add, But I realised the ‘artist’ metadata is never added. Normally when I add albums I need to edit them manually so I can incorporate the Artist tag in each track and that is tremendously annoying, especially in Various Artists albums.
But yesterday I ralized something: when I incorporate a new album, just when I add it, and while Plex is still reading it, the album appears perfectly: song name, artist name, album artist name all correct. As soon as plex ends reading the metadata of the new album and the album description appears, the artist tag disappears and only the song title displays in the album.
Any idea how to make plex read artists data no matter what? I have local media assets activated and in the first place of the agent list, because I have music videos in another location.
If your files contain immaculate embedded meta tags (i.e. complete and correct),
enable “Prefer local metadata” in the properties of your music library.
Apparently my metadata wasn’t that immaculate, as soon as I turned off “prefer local metadata” Plex immediately started reading and tagging all Various Artists albums correctly. Thanks for the quick help!
May I ask: this solution works if Plex reads and recognises the album. When the album is not recognised and matched by the scanner, then this happens again, only the song titles appear. Is there any way for Plex to read the file metadata for albums not recognised with the scanner? Thank you.
Unfortunately you will have to use “prefer local metadata” in cases, where Plex does mis-match an album. (Completely un-matched albums are not as big an issue.)
Which then requires you to correct the metadata of your whole collection.
