Hello,
I’ve been trying to get this working for a while so that my family and I can access my Plex server while we are away from the house. I currently have a Double-NAT setup at home and worked on forwarding the ports to get Plex to be available outside of my network. It was working for the past month and all of the sudden just stopped working. I thought maybe it was an issue with the routers but upon checking all the settings, everything is still the same and nothing has been modified since I had forwarded the ports.
I did choose to manually specify the public port and though that the cause of the issue would be that. No luck.
I’d love for any and all advice on how I can get this back up and running.
With a double NAT you will definitely need to use manual port forwarding. Forward public to internal router 1, then forward from incoming on router 2 to your PMS server.
If you can post your rules, we can see if that is correct. Although, it is always better if you can remove the double NAT.
Unfortunately, I am unable to get rid of the double-NAT setup since I’m not the person who is handling the internet for the house that I am currently staying in so I figured I’d just make the best of my situation until I can make it more beneficial to myself. Where can I get the rules to show you?
The way I currently have the ports setup is
Router 1:
Router 2 IP
Local Port Start /End: 32400/32400
External Port Start/End: 50000/50000
Router 2:
Computer IP address
Local Port Start /End: 32400/32400
External Port Start/End: 50000/50000
Internet
->Router 1:
Router 2 IP
Local Port Start /End: 32400/32400
External Port Start/End: 50000/50000
->Router 2:
Computer IP address
Local Port Start /End: 32400/32400
External Port Start/End: 32400/32400
So I’m thinking I still did it wrong, because I have checked my Plex and it still says “Not available outside your network”
I’m still able to connect to it from my account but can’t from my family account.
I’ve checked the ports with the Port Forwarding program and that still says that the ports are closed for both 32400 and 50000. I have also tried adding the external IP address to the forwarding tab for Router 2 but get an error that says “IP subnet should be the same as LAN subnet”
Are both routers using the same IP subnet? That’s not right. Router 2 should use a different subnet so it doesn’t get confused with Router 1.
router 1 WAN - your public IP
router 1 DHCP range 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254
router 2 WAN - 192.168.1.x (whatever you assign)
router 2 DHCP range 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.254 (this should be different from router 1)
your server should be on this subnet
port forward router 1
public IP:50000 => 192.168.1.x:32400
port forward router 2
192.168.1.x:32400 => 192.168.2.x:32400
I hope I’m not causing you any frustration… because I feel dumb as sh*t
port forward router 1
public IP:50000 => 192.168.1.x:32400
port forward router 2
192.168.1.x:32400 => 192.168.2.x:32400
Router 1 [Ubee] is the modem/router, connected to the internet, given to us by the ISP. Router 2 [Cisco] is the router provided by us at the house.
So let me try to get this again…
From Router 1: The IP I put into the forwarding section of this will be WAN from Router 2…
From Router 2: I put in my public IPv4 address…or my local IP
