Plex Server Configuration

Server Version#: 1.20.4.3517
Player Version#:

Hi,
I have set up a new Plex server and wanted to know if not having a dedicated graphics card in the system below would help stop buffering?

Windows 10
i5 3450S 2.8GHz Quad
16 GB RAM
Integrated Intel Graphics 630 with 2.13GB
SanDisk SSD (Main)
WD 4TB Sata 2 (Media)
Seagate 4TB Sata 2 (Media)
Gigabit Network.

If a dedicated graphics card would help, any ideas on whats a good one to get that is fairly silent?

Many Thanks

Will.

A dedicated graphics card can help… if you also get a Plex Pass membership

That being said… more modern Intel CPUs have integrated GPUs that can do the same (6th/7th generation or newer Core processors); might be an alternative

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I have Intel64 Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9? So to utilize the hardware acceleration I would need to buy a Pass Subscription? Would this subscription also allow me to turn of the default Plex home page so clients would only see my Plex server?

Many Thanks

Will.

The i5 3450S has some basic hw transcoding capabilities; the usually recommended minimum version is an i3/i5 6xxx or 7xxx.

Using hw accelerated streaming is a premium feature of Plex… some users did the math and figured it’s cheaper than buying a dedicated GPU

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by deactivating the standard home page of Plex. If you refer to Plex‘ online media sources, you can disable those in your account settings (no Plex Pass required).
There’s a section of support articles highlighting the key features linked to a Plex Pass membership

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, looks like the Plex Pass is the way to go as I have a micro ATX board with no slots for a GPU card. Just double checked my chip and it says 7th gen. Thanks for the info regarding the online media sources, will look at that next.

Many Thanks

Will.
