Plex Server Crashes when Fire TV Cube App Starts-up

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830 (and noticed on the previous release!)
Player Version#: 8.10.0.21911

Using my Amazon Cube, if I launch Plex Player it crashes the server. I don’t see any logs about this either. Please advise if I a missing something and can provide more details.

The one observation I have is that this happens the moment the Player reaches out to the Server for information. I have tested that over and over. If I have the Plex Player open on my Fire Cube, then open the server, everything works fine.

This is also happening to me on my fire stick started about a week ago. Tried it while streaming to my phone stick boots up and everything is fine launch the plex app on the fire stick and the server crashes. I login to the pc and see the plex icon in the tray as soon as I over over it it’s gone and the server app needs opened again nothing in the logs. This is baffling.

Hoping to bump this up … any thoughts on what is causing it? It was nearly world war 3 here yesterday due to this causing my wife’s shows not to record.

I did some experiments this morning, since no one has responded to help otherwise.

It seems that one culprit (I don’t know if there are more) is the Home/Hub. When that loads, that is what is crashing the server. Today I decided to do a reset on that. That may have done the trick. Since this happens usually only the first time I turn on my TV and connect, each day, it is difficult to troubleshoot. The reason I think this may have helped was that I was hitting the “Home” option on my Fire and it would crash the server. I would go back and repeat this, which repeated the crash. After I reset the Hubs/Customizations, I was able to keep going to “Home” and it didn’t crash. The big test will be the next couple of days.

Had the same issue all last night. Opening up the app on the cube would ‘crash’ the server and would knock it offline everytime. It would connect again eventually on it’s own but then get knocked off once I tried to browse into another library. Force quitting the app, unplugging, restarting etc over and over did not fix the problem.

I think I narrowed it down to this running process:

‘Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.agents.imdb]’

I only ever glance at the running processes if my CPU’s running high, and I don’t ever remember seeing that one in there.

Got fed up and then deleted the app on the cube completely, reinstalled it and all is running fine now for a day. Was stress testing with 20 streams, all works fine. My home screen in the Plex app actually loads within a couple seconds also now, it seemed to get slower and slower…

Reinstalling also didn’t lose any of my setting’s such as what I had watched, and is resuming where I’d left off (for anyone worried losing all that stuff)

I notice there’s now only 2 running Plex processes instead of the 3 (the added IMDB one) that were running whilst I was having this issue.

/usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server

Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.system] /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-3c …

They’ve ran all day whilst using the cube and other devices. The IMDB one does not show up now. So seems some connection there.

What was odd though was that the server wasn’t crashing per say as it was still running in my linux Webmin running processes. There was also no weird CPU spikes to suggest sometheing was wrong with the server being overloading and crashing. Everything looked normal at that end. All other traffic on the server was running fine also so not a network issue.

In conclusion, if anyone has the same issue reinstall the app on the cube or check the running processes for anything other than those 2 listed above. You should just be able to kill the process and see if that helps before reinstalling…

I can say that the reset of the home page did resolve it for me. It hasn’t happened since. I’m guessing that maybe the change in guides or something had a bad cache issue.

UPDATE: Deleting the app on Fire TV Cube seems to be working. Thanks for the insight, Macaroni_Apple.

Server: Mac Mini - Plex Version 4.50.1 (macOS Catalina)

I am having the same problem. Basically, the exact same thing.

At home we have (2) 2020 2nd gen Fire TV Cubes (running Fire OS 7.2.2.9) for serving a lot of media. One gets used for everything and a very high frequency with Plex, much with a friend’s shared libraries.

There hadn’t been any issues until the last week or two after I updated to the latest version, cleaned, added and overhauled my Plex library and updated to the macOS.

Initially, I thought the VPN was switching on and blocking the server.

Messages between the Mac Mini and the Fire TV Cube read things including:
-Something went wrong
-There was an error loading your home screen.
-No content available
-Error loading content

I realized that the server was absolutely crashing every time it was being accessed, even if it was just from another room.

I spent hours today troubleshooting including deleting and reinstalling Plex, adjusting all app settings, deleting and reinstalling libraries, checking all router issues.

Every time I’d go back and restart it, it would eventually crash again. After accessing server on the laptop and from apps on several iPhones, an iPad and the Samsung Smart, I was able to narrow it down with certainty that the crash was happening from the Fire TV Cubes.

And it crashes EVERYTHING in the server including the Remote Access setting.

Tried using a different browser and resetting the homepage but that didn’t help. Will try deleting and reinstalling the app on the Cubes tomorrow.

Server version (Windows 10 desktop): 1.21.3.4021 AND 1.21.1.3830
Player (Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k): 8.12.4.22902

I’m seeing the same issue. Opening the Plex App on my Fire stick causes a server crash.

Can someone from Plex please take a look at this? There should be several crash reports available from my system:

Same exact thing started happened to me yesterday after the recent update. Open Plex using the app on an Amazon Fire Cube and it crashes the server. No problems running it anywhere else.

I hope they patch the issue here.

I too have the identical problem, recently changed to a Mac mini and thought that was the problem. However after testing its the fire TV 4K stick, hoping for a patch shortly…

Same here. Fire Stick (not 4k) and pms on rpi4 debian. Always crashing when starting plex on the fire stick. Please fix!

Has anyone tried yesterdays update? I’m just updating now to see what happens…

My plex setup (client and server) is up 2 date. Server crashed 1 hour before when starting fire tv plex app on fire Stick.

I tested the beta update on 2/24 and it still crashed my Windows 10 box. If I kept the app running on the fire cube and restarted the plex service on Windows 10, it would allow me to watch stuff. Seems to just crash when I started the app, which is an improvement.

Yep, can confirm same behaviour - although crashing when opening the android based client, restarting the server whilst client is still open and then being able to play stuff is the behaviour I had before this update.

Taking a while to be fixed…

Just curious if you’ve tried reinstalling the app on your Amazon device? Reinstalling the app worked for me.
I think Plex is storing some kind of persistent data that causes the issue and reinstalling the app wipes the persistent data.

That said Plex should still fix this!

Thanks - Just tried that this morning and it seems to be much more stable now. Shame it has taken such a long time to get (hopefully) a fix for this issue. Not impressive as a plex pass user.
