Plex server is unavailable (QNAP TS-473)

Server Version#:1.13.5.291 and 1.14.1.488
Player Version#:web player

Hi Guys,

I have a TS473 NAS (QTS 4.3.6.0875) and I have installed the Plex server from AppCenter (and the newer version on PLEX Downloads tried also).
The problem is that, when I start the Plex server from QTS, I can see the player GUI only with “Looking for servers…” sign on top left.
I asked Qnap support for help in many curve, but they cannot repeat this situation and cannot help me.
We have tried the common things (IP check, remaining files on NAS, etc.) but everithing looks OK.
I had try to reach it from other PCs, with various browsers and the result was same.
I have an Asus RT-AC68U router with Merlin and I have tried many settings, without any success.
I have installed the Plex server Windows version on my HTPC and it is working well.

Have you any idea?

Ps.: the NAS was upgraded. It means I had an old ARM based TS-410, and I put HDDs to the new TS-473. The upgrade process has run in normal way, and the old firmware updated to the new. After that I istalled the Plex server…
Every other apps, and the NAS are running well.

Thanks in advance,
Attila

I assume you are installing the x86_64 (64-bit) version of Plex.

Make sure you have IPv6 disabled on your qnap, as Plex doesn’t fully support it.

What browser are you using and what http address are you pointing at?

Hi Trexx,

IPv6 is disabled on NAS and router also. I’m using Opera genarally but I have tried it with Chrome, Vivaldi, Edge too.
The IP of NAS is 192.169.1.38 as locked manually to static on the router. I’m behind a Cable router, with Asus. I have used 32400 port to reach the Plex Server (http://192.169.1.38:32400).
As I mentioned I have a HTPC on 192.169.1.53 and the windows Plex server is reachable on 192.169.1.53:32400. I have installed it as a proof.

And yes, the 64 bit version was installed.

Try running this script via SSH on the the box.

OK it is done, but the result is
IP Address of PMS server: 192.169.1.38.
Comparing entered passwords
Comparing entered passwords ok
Getting PMS Server Identifier
Getting PMS Server Identifier ok
Getting User Token from plex.tv
Getting User Token from plex.tv ok
Getting PMS Claim Token
Getting PMS Claim Token ok
Claiming server
Fatal error happened
HTTP returned Status 401

My guess is your issue is due to double NAT (your cable router, and then having a 2nd router behind it.).

You need to get that resolved. Best option would be to provide sever logs to confirm.
Troubles - Learn how to provide great logs

Hi,

I cannot provide server logs, because I cannot reach PMS.

It is cable modem before my ASUS router and no bridge mode enabled by provider.
So the windows version of the PMS is working in this network environment.
I had installed PMS on my first NAS TS-410 and it has worked also (but it was very slow on old ARM).

Do you have other idea?

Thanks in advance!

If it is only a cable modem in front of your ASUS router then you should be ok (no double NAT).

So there are a couple options.

  1. Uninstall Plex completely via App Center. Then do a reboot just to make sure all is clean. This WILL delete any Plex Library that currently exists.

If you are comfortable using Putty, I would putty (ssh) into your QNAP (use the same login as you use on the web page). Then assuming you are on the standard QNAP setup, type the following:

ls /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/

If that comes back with a not found message, then you have a clean uninstall.

Then log onto https://app.plex.tv and log in.

Click on your account icon (top right) and then Account. Click on Authorized Devices on the left. Then Filter on Server. Make sure you don’t have any servers related to your TS-473 listed there.

At that point, reboot your TS-473.

I would try doing a reinstall of the latest Plex server version that you can download from http://Plex.TV.

It is in /share/MD0_DATA/.qpkg, because it is a legacy volume.

I will try it.

It wasn’t succesful at first shoot, I can try it on Wednesday again…

I would recommend backing up all your data to an external drive and reformatting the volume under QTS 4.3.x.

You are going to be limited in many fashions by that legacy volume from larger volume expansion, snapshots, etc.

Just because you can migrate the drives to a newer NAS doesn’t always mean it is a GOOD thing to do.

OK, I know that, but I have not 7 TB+ additional disk space at this moment.

So I have tried it without any success. I have checked my network settings. I have a single NAT , the ASUS in AP mode.
:frowning:
So maybe I have to give it up.

Unfortunately you may see other issues in other areas besides plex as well.

I would highly recommend grabbing a 8-10TB external USB drive when they hit sale in your area.

Ok, I made a check shortly. I have connected the nas and my pc to my cellphones hotspot with wirless. And it is working. The claiming has an error, but the pms setup started. So i think the error is somwhere on network settings. But i don’t know where…

If that ip is what you are using it is a problem as it is not a private ip.
It should be 192.168.1.38

It could be. But I have tried th Windows version of pms and it has worked with a similar ip.

Plex only supports the using private reserved subnets.

Please reset your NW/Devices to align to one of the reserved private subnet scopes.
