Plex server keeps crashing over and over

Plex keeps constantly crashing as people are trying to play files. I left it overnight (when no one was playing anything) and it stayed up the entire night. Now that it’s morning and people are trying to play things again it starts to crash. This only started happening the last couple of days and has never happened before. This happens when people try to play things from directly connecting in the browser, or from a web browser through the plex website.

I tried fixing this by updating to the latest version manually

I have attached all the log files and crash dumps. I’m not really sure what the exact cause of the crashes are though (from 1.24.0.4930-ab6e1a058 to 1.24.1.4931-1a38e63c6) but the exact same thing keeps happening

I got it to crash again this time with DEBUG level logs enabled:

I disabled the following two settings and it seems to now work:

  • Use hardware acceleration when available
  • Use hardware-accelerated video encoding

I do not have a GPU in the system, but for some reason these are what was causing the crashing (as far as I can tell)

PMS will always probe for VAAPI and Nvidia unless told otherwise.

Given your Nehalem doesn’t have QSV capability, it will fail on that probe
then move on looking for more.

That as foundation,

  1. Which Nvidia card do you have installed ?
  2. Which Nvidia drivers do you have installed?

Lastly, it doesn’t hurt to check what /dev/dri shows us.

It should be showing us only 1 renderDxxx device – the Nvidia

With your next post, also please include the Codec type and SDR/HDR status of the video being played which faults it.
