Plex server keeps shutting down daily - Synology NAS

Hi all - first time poster here, I will be doing my best to follow the guidelines here! I have had Plex installed on my Synology NAS for a couple of years. In the past few months it started shutting down to the point where every morning when I check it, the server is offline and I have to reopen it (the NAS is doing fine). I browsed the forum, and followed a couple of recommendations like disabling the DLNA Server. I only use Plex for my FLAC music library, in case that matters.

Server Version#: Synology NAS
DS216+II
DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 2

Player Version#: 1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896

Also not sure if it matters but I use a Macbook Pro (Mojave 10.14.6) to access my Plex server on the Synology.

Logs are attached. Thank you to any kind soul who can help me out!

I should also mention - it does not appear to be happening at any specific time. This morning I updated the software and rescanned my library, came back a few hours later and it was offline.

Plex Media Server.3.log

It was commanded to shut down.

Thanks Chuck. Hm… I did shut down earlier today around that time to install the new version. Then it started back up, and I left the library scanning when I left the house around 3pm. Are you not seeing anything in the logs that show an event happening between 3pm and 8pm? I will take a look too, now that I know where I should be looking.

I will share logs again here once it happens the next time. Based on past experience that will probably be tomorrow morning.

Ok - found this in Plex Media Server 2.log - this is the shutdown event that I believe I’m trying to figure out. This happened when I was not at home, so it was not me shutting it down.

You have something ( a scheduled task ? ) which restarts Plex or reboots the Syno ?

Nothing that I can tell. My Plex has the same scheduled task settings basically as the screenshot on this page, which should be happening in the middle of the night.

Is it possible Plex is running something that I’m not seeing in my “scheduled tasks” menu? Also, shouldn’t it restart automatically after any of these scheduled tasks anyway?

The Synology is showing uptime of 5 days right now, and only has 2 scheduled tasks; Auto Smart Test and Empty Recycle Bin (which don’t run frequently).

I had my library scan set to hourly … I have now set it to daily. Not sure if that would have done anything. I have also set “analyze audio tracks for loudness” from “as a scheduled task” to Never. Will see if anything changes.

Plex doesn’t turn itself off. It will keep doing what you’ve scheduled forever.

The logs showed the external (key here) signal was sent.

On Synology, the only thing that will do this are Package stop/start and System restart. (I’m the Synology package maintainer).

Do you have anything else installed which could be telling your packages to start/stop/update ?

Interesting. I realized that I still have Emby installed on my Synology (had tried it out, albeit very briefly). I am guessing that could have been it. I’ve uninstalled it

So after uninstalling Emby, things were running smoothly for around 3 days. Then I had another unprompted shutdown of Plex yesterday. Logs attached.

The only thing that I changed in my Plex settings prior to this happening was re-activating the “Scan my library periodically” checkbox, which I had previously unchecked while troubleshooting.

The only packages I have installed in my Synology are Plex, and the Synology pre-installed apps USB Copy, Universal Search, OAuth Service, and Filestation. The server itself has been up for 9 days.

So I have a general idea - is this version of Synology NAS (DS216+II) considered outdated and unreliable? It just seems like something is going on where my NAS can’t handle the software and is shutting it down. Since, as you explain, Plex won’t shut itself down.

Relatedly, I have seen a significant slowdown in performance in my Synology UI in the past weeks. E.g. I double click on Control Panel icon on the desktop and it takes 10-15 seconds to open… but no CPU or Ram issues shown in the diagnostics. Guessing that could be related.

Thanks again.

Thank you very much for your help. I followed all your instructions and reinstalled DSM, but I am still seeing the same recurring shutdowns of Plex. I will reach out to Synology Support and see if they can diagnose the issue.

Hi all - not sure - should Tony’s request belong in its own thread? Not sure whats recommended practice. But I have an update on my original request.

After working with the Synology people, this is their assessment:

Thank you for your information. From the log we could see the Plex process is being killed because the NAS is out of memory.

2020-08-11T17:31:29-07:00 SynologyRB kernel: [251438.591164] Out of memory: Kill process 3717 (Plex Media Serv) score 819 or sacrifice child
2020-08-11T17:31:29-07:00 SynologyRB kernel: [251438.600623] Killed process 3717 (Plex Media Serv) total-vm:4435908kB, anon-rss:426892kB, file-rss:0kB

Plex Media Server is a third party package and not managed by us but by the Plex Team https://forums.plex.tv/. I would recommend consulting with the plex support to check on the memory usage issue or the memory requirements for the plex package.

Chuck/Trumpy81 - any suggestions of how I should proceed? Is my NAS just failing and I should get a new one? My audio library is 2 TB, and I have 1.5 TB free, and my library is not changing very frequently. Not sure what would be requiring so much memory that the NAS wouldn’t be able to handle it.

Thank you! Glad we are getting to the bottom of it. I was afraid that the NAS as-is wasn’t up for the job. I am going to review my options. May be best to upgrade at this point.

Just wanted to say thank you for your help. It all worked - was able to successfully upgrade the RAM (that video was crucial!). Things seem to be much improved.
