Plex server M1 performance expriences

Hi, looking forward to buy a mac mini m1 to replace my mac mini 2010. From experience with the m1 architecture is 8Gb/256 sys drive enough with the native universal app? My Usage: Just one film stream per day (4k or HD) and a constant music stream for one user in a gigabit network.

Thanks for hints (of course w/o guarantee)

If you have the budget, buy the 16GB version.

I’ve had the 8GB for a few days and without doing much, all memory was used which resulted in swapping. Though I did not noticed much less performance when swapping, I decided to get the 16GB M1.

I had Plex running on it and it worked flawless.

Thanks James, so if i understand right, your 16 GB is not swapping (much)… Ou still running Plex on the machine ?

No, only if I have a lot (graphic / photo apps) open at the same time with Roon (Roon grows to 5 or 6Gb memory usage in a few ours).

Since about two weeks I moved Plex to a Synology NAS to reduce the amount of devices in the office/house running all day long, trying to save a little bit of energy :-). It is slower, especially when it is doing the sonically analysis of new albums but it runs well.

Thanks James, last point does the 256 GB model has 2x128 “SSD” Chips or does the 512 Gb model has 2x 256 chips for maximum bandwith ?
