Plex server transcoding 4K instead of using proper 1080p file

Plex is having some serious issues if it isn’t streaming from the web app. The web app will select 1080p no problem on my Pixelbook. However, Plex is transcoding 4k content (video, audio, and container) down to 1080p instead of using the second file associated with the movie. The second file is a perfectly compatible file for video and audio, worst case a container transcode is needed.

I have the latest beta installed, but this seems to have been an issue before the last update anyway.

Plex is supposed to automagically select the most appropriate file format for the player. It is not doing so on at least two Samsung TVs and a Playstation 4.

Bug?

I’ve seen a bit of seemingly unnecessary transcoding lately - like already optimized files being converted for different rokus that should handle them fine, then later when the same user is watching the next episode, it goes back to direct play. I’m also running the latest beta. I wonder if it has to do with the new auto quality feature. I’d like to go back to the last version without it in order to test, but I’m not sure which one that is.
