So, I have some 4k content and it’s not transcoding on my 1080p TVs. It is trying to Direct Play which causes a lot of stuttering, obviously.
How can I force it to transcode?
My server is attached to a Threadripper 2950x (16 core/32 threads) with 64gb RAM and Titan Xx2 SLI - so it’s not a Server problem of transcoding.
And the movies are stored on NVME Samsung Pro 980 1TB - so it’s not a storage issue either.
There’s got to be some setting that detects the 4k content is being played on a 1080p Stereo device that triggers transcoding Server side down to 1080p and stereo remix.
You say Plex Media Player (PMP). So are you using PMP on your computer connected to a TV? Or are you referring to the Plex for Smart TV app that runs on your TV itself?
I have all the setups. I’ve tested Plex for the HTPC on various PCs in the home with various monitors. I have the Smart TV app through a Vizio TV, then I have two NUCs with Win 10/PMP (old school version) connected to projectors 1080p.
You’ll need to give specific examples. On your PC, if you are using the Plex Media Player program, that does support 4K.
Playing back on the Plex for Smart TV app on a 1080p TV should result in transcoding. If not, I would need logs from PMS and details on the file to see why it doesn’t.
