I installed Plex Server on Ubuntu Server on a Mini PC NUC with the contents on a Synology NAS. I have a very large music library. Overall, it works very well, except for the automatic scanning for new content. When a new album is added to Plex Server, the scan doesn’t start (the options in the settings are selected), and if I start it manually, the scan always starts from zero and takes a long time to display the albums. I can’t resolve this. My question is this: If I put Plex Server on Windows 11, will the scans be recognized? And would Windows Server be better than Windows 11? Thanks.
It is not about Linux vs. Windows.
The main difficulty lies in the fact that in your current configuration media storage and Plex server are on different systems. This makes it more difficult to trigger a signal when a new file is added or modified. Keep also in mind that ideally the trigger should be pulled only after the file has been written completely.
The Synology NAS is Linux-based and by default uses SAMBA to offer CIFS-compatible file sharing to Windows machines.
Have you tried to use an NFS file share, instead of a CIFS-based one?
Please, I need further explanation. What instructions should I follow? Is “Increase the number of directories Linux can monitor (inotify) for PMS” correct?
That’s what Otto and MovieFan are referring to.
It might be a safer bet to rely on scheduled or manual scans, though. Those file system events aren’t necessarily reported from the NAS to your Linux machine via inotify. The Syno KB you had linked only explains how to mount the drives, not that this will allow inotify integration.
This is interesting, it didn’t complete loading the music library before you grabbed the logs.

Would you mind repeating this but waiting a few more minutes so we know we’ll capture the error ? ( It seems pretty obvious the music library is what’s filling the table )
When you get the total, you can either do it this way or with a calculator (using only the integer values)
It you want to add more (yet another 32768 directories) that’s find.
just remember each notify slot uses 540+Length_of_path bytes which is taken from non-paged kernel memory (not swap)
If the total number of slots you already have systctl -a | grep user_watches is greater than what the need, we need to see what else is happening.
This is where the longer running Logs file ZIP will help
That’s it, I hope it’s written the entire file after 15 minutes. Unfortunately, I don’t understand what I should do with the total amount. I’ll wait for instructions on how to proceed. Thanks.
I am surprised that after 15 minutes, it was still loading directories.
Gigabit LAN is not that slow. What’s going on with the LAN ?
Are you trying to use WiFi for everything ?
Hi, I entered the modified string but the result was the same (permission denied). The scan is extremely slow. I have about 60,000 folders for each album, and 200-300 folders in superdirectories. Should the scan list every album folder? If so, it would take a few months. I don’t know how to proceed. I installed PMS directly on the NAS to test it. Once I’ve loaded all the music, I’ll be able to see if it runs well (the NAS is a slightly older Synology 916+ from 2016). I can definitely see that the automatic scan works as expected. I might even decide to buy a new NAS for this purpose. However, solving this problem with the NUC running Ubuntu Server would be the best option (and also to save money). Is there any other way to proceed?
Login to the NAS and use Synology File Station. Right click on the folder holding the media and choose Properties. It will take a few minutes, but it will show the folder count. Repeat as needed to cover all media files, then add up the numbers.
