@ChuckPA I’d think the configuration involves the compiler creating different versions for each platform. However, to the developer, that will be transparent.
It just seems very inefficient to create a version of Plex for Windows, and a version of Plex for XBox, with possible different versions for ARM-based laptops in the future, when all of those could be targeted with one code base (and this would also allow support for Windows Phone, Project Andromeda, and future Windows 10 based devices).
Maybe this is something @elan should be thinking about since he is the CTO.
@ChuckPA to answer the question “Do you want it all? What can you live without?”
I simply want an application which would allow me to watch movies or listen to music on the go without streaming i.e. I require synchronisation that works. This would preferably be on my Windows 10 Phone (which I will have for the next two years), or it could be on a laptop or smaller device. I also require the application to be stable.
It is surprising to me that the UWP application for Plex on Windows 10 Phone is so unstable. I have applications on my phone for podcasting, viewing YouTube videos, listening to audiobooks etc. They all work great, whether streaming or working offline.
Typically, with Plex on my phone, I will start listening to an album, and it will seem to be fine. The album will play, and then the lock screen on my phone will activate. The album continues to play. I decide at some point to listen to another album, the music is still playing, I unlock my phone, and (although the music is still playing) Plex no longer seems to be running - there is no user interface. So, to change albums, I have to run Plex again. This only seems to happen with Plex, and it happens whether I am streaming the music from my server or playing local files. With regard to synchronisation, it is too slow and often fails.

I’m pretty sure that is something that comes under Elan’s purview.
Yeah. Question is if he‘s also sure about that.

For sure, but if Plex are serious about supporting Windows 10 devices going forward, they have to think about how they will develop for Windows on ARM etc. A Win32 app won’t cut it, since it will run emulated on Windows on ARM.
UWP is the obvious choice, since it covers all devices, and is easier for the developers to work on.
To further make my point, Win32 API is EoL, just as Windows Phone is. PMP, therefore, shouldn’t be developed further, unless it is ported to UWP.
I’m sure that the Windows / XBox developers at Plex understand this, but none of them ever come on here to discuss their product.

Hmm… it seems that once upon a time Plex was working on a UWP app that would work on XBox One, PC, and mobile.
Wonder why they stopped…

F***ed up Product Management. In the last year Plex stopped, changed or bugged pretty much everything good in their platform.

Good find.
Looking at the screenshots for the listing and the reported build number of 3.0.2 it looks like it could just be the beta for the current UWP app before it was released.
The first UWP build of the current Win10 app was build 3.0.31 (the one before that being 2.1.4.29), so it’s likely that the listed beta app was a closed beta for the UWP app we’re currently using.

Except the beta worked also on XBox One.
I’m sure if @roguecode was around, he could clarify this.

Yes, but the current XBOX app was rewritten and released in October 2017, with a year gap between releases, so the beta app could have been split into development forks and released as the new XBOX app.

Possibly, although I don’t know why they would do that.
It’s PLEX. Why do they do anything?
Like ignoring feature requests so they can add features the majority of the user base doesn’t want.
I really don’t understand it.
They have a working Xbox One UWP app.
The whole contept of UWP is that this will also run on Windows 10 (PC) with very little effort …
The problem is … currently there is so much that doesn’t make any sense any more with Plex.

Exactly what I have been saying. It’s like people are intentio ally trying to make UWP fail.

I wonder what happened to all the development work that was happening in June last year, according to @BigWheel
Over six months ago, and still no sign of it.
