So almost 3 months since elan’s reply that they are in the final stages of figuring out their strategy for this app… The Xbox app got updated today… I’m still very happy with Emby and their speed of updates so I think it’s time to say bye bye to Plex.

Heard Emby was a pain to set up. How did it go for you?

Setup is comparable with Plex, really similar. For me the server has been very robust, but clients could use some more polishing. Sync does work, though. But they don’t have automatic bitrate that changes on the fly. They have Google home support now, but I don’t like how it’s done.

Extremely easy, it picked up all my videos without issues, and it was very smooth. I use Plex mainly on either a Shield, Xbox One X and Surface. A few things I really like:
- no need for a plex.tv account, auth can be completely local
- I can manage the server from the android app
- android app supports picture in picture (no idea if Plex has added that)
- server is rock solid
- library order is configurable in the clients, and more options to configure what the clients look like (Theater has themes)
- the responsiveness in the forums. I had a few small issues that were quickly responded to and resolved.
- Alexa integration just works.
some things that i’m not a fan of:
- clients are definitely less slick and need some polishing. I really dont like how synced media is displayed, but at least sync works…
- no way to test Emby Theater without a Premiere subscription, and there are nag screens.
- Premiere has a 15 device limit that’s very vague and even as a single user I was getting warnings that I was close to my limit.
- no equivalent to Tautulli, and the built in notifications are not as great.
ARRGH, yet another error with the windows store plex app. Trying to play synced local content, and keep getting Arg_TimeoutException error.
Looks like Plex has all but put a fork in the windows app. Notice today on the Plex news email under mobile sync it says “Mobile Sync
Bring your media with you on your Android or iOS device and enjoy it offline anywhere.”
Looks like those are going to be the only supported platforms for sync going forward. Just wish they would at least make an announcement that we have been left holding a bag of broken tricks so we won’t waste our energy holding onto hope things will be fixed.

Microsoft killed off Windows Phone, so this isn’t a huge surprise. Adding sync to the browser would be a better idea at this point.

The Windows app allowed desktop/tablet sync, being UWP it is/was all platforms…> @coryskis said:

The Xbox ap is still being updated somewhat regularly, I expect that to be ported to windows 10 eventually.
UWP IS NOT A WINDOWS PHONE PROGRAM!
Developers need to get this through their thick heads! UWP is the future of Windows APP development and it will be FORCED in the future! Get on the bus or be left behind!
Windows 10 S-Mode is now available on EVERY computer and prevents you from installing anything OTHER than UWP apps. Look forward to a UWP version of Microsoft Office (most likely this year) and UWP versions of EVERYTHING MAJOR. Once this happens your company computer will force S-Mode and then the Microsoft App Store will explode. I don’t understand why there is such resistance to this concept.
One App for all the devices, code it once, deploy it once, MS handles your licensing. Just do it and everyone will quit complaining at you!
P.S. Microsoft didn’t kill off Windows Phone. I have a Lumia 950. It’s amazing and gets regular updates. The App Developers stopped supporting it! All you need to do is make the f%##ing app and it will work fine on my phone AND my computer and my tablet! It runs the same operating system and gets the same updates!

I’m getting really tired of hearing this.
I’ve look extensively for anything that would support this conclusion, but there is none.
None at all.

I am a web developer, and I am like 99% positive that sync will never ever come to the web app/browser. And it has nothing to do with whether or not plex would even want to. But imagine for a second that any webpage you visit was able to essentially download any file it wanted onto your hard drive. Its a major security hole and I dont think there is a clean easy way to do it, other than simply making your files available for download like any other file you might get through a web browser, but then there would obviously be no organization of local files or anything of the sort since you would have to manually point the browser to where the file is after the fact (again, that would be another major security hole if websites were just automatically allowed to get access to your file system on your computer).
I realize that windows development has now shifted to PMP, but PMP seems designed almost exclusively for desktop use or TV/HTPC use. The web interface that you can use absolutely fails when using a touch screen, and the tv interface, well… obviously thats designed for use with a remote control. And I dont even know if you can sync with that either.
Bumping this again. Just waiting for the death notice.
I’ve not been here for a while, the Discourse upgrade is looking good.
So has there been any news on the state of the UWP app?
I’m not holding my breath or anything, I don’t really use the UWP app anymore because of how unstable it is.
Absolutely nothing. The poll we were asked to post seems to have been a total waste of everyone’s time.
Emby continues to look better and better.
I did a test install of Emby in it’s own container, but it just doesn’t seem to be the same level of polish as PLEX, unfortunately.
Thats true. But they are catching up quickly. Mostly because they listen to their user’s wishes and concentrate on core functionality.
I had exactly the same feeling than you, but the more I use Emby the more I like it.
Any news on the Windows UWP App?
I’d guess they just dragged is along long enough for us to quit asking and have just thrown it in the trash. How we are suppose to sync content on windows tablets, laptops, surface devices, etc is beyond me.
